Business Intelligence Technical Analyst- AITS (Hybrid/Remote)

Job Summary
The purpose of the Business Intelligence Technical Analyst is to provide support for the business intelligence (BI) architecture of Decision Support including the technical infrastructure of the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), BI applications, and related systems environment. This position maintains BI systems, operational reliability, capacity planning, disaster recovery mechanisms, and plans for future BI delivery.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Administer applications providing Business Intelligence (BI) services, Data Movement services, Data Science services and Data Virtualization services. This responsibility involves design and configuration of the software, overall management of the application and working with staff involved in daily operations with the software. This also includes supporting research and evaluation activities related to new technologies to support data storage, analytics, and business intelligence. (30%)
  • Design, manage, and monitor security design processes related to the security of Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence security. Provision security access as requested in compliance of operational procedures. Monitor security operations to ensure compliance with existing university and departmental security policies. Monitor security implementation to ensure continued compliance with intended access plans. Review university policies and guidelines to ensure that Decision Support security policies and procedures remain in compliance through partnership with the AITS Enterprise Systems Assurance team. Recommend changes or new policies as appropriate. (30%)
  • Provide operational support for university-wide systems used by students, employees, and university clients. Work with IT professionals across the University of Illinois to provide core systems integration and operational services. Participate in On-Call rotation to support operational systems. (20%)
  • Miscellaneous duties including (20%):
    a. Conduct research to identify opportunities for improving the BI Architecture and Decision Support product delivery focusing on new industry products, new features to existing products and industry trends with BI and data warehousing techniques.
    b. Identify methods to collect operational metrics in support of the following: measurement of return on investment; usage analysis; and security analysis. Analyze systems and processes to identify opportunities for increased efficiency and efficacy.
    c. Serve as principal analyst for BI Environment Management activities: Collaborate closely with the Project Management team to schedule Development, QA, and Dress Rehearsal environments; Coordinate with the AITS Database Administration team to create or refresh database environments; Design, manage, and monitor implementation processes related to testing, security, risk analysis, and quality assurance for ongoing Data Warehouse new releases; Collaborate with the DS Information Delivery team to support security and changes to existing structures during project implementation phases; Perform risk analysis, provide statistics, and report findings to the AITS Leadership Team.
    d. Serve as subject matter expert on enterprise infrastructure components and middleware. Monitor production, test, QA, and development Business Intelligence environments. Escalate issues to the appropriate team. This includes the data warehouse and BI technology environments; Capacity planning for Business Intelligence Architecture and Decision Support products; Back-up and disaster recovery plans, procedure testing, and implementation for Business Intelligence Architecture; Business Intelligence Architecture documentation and standards; Defining and implementing Business Intelligence Architecture standards for the Decision Support environment.
    e. Participate in committees and projects for AITS (e.g., service improvement initiatives) and/or partner organizations (e.g., Technology Services, ITS and ACCC) to meet enterprise objectives.
    f. As needed, serve as a backup resource for the Assistant Director, Business Intelligence Architecture and other members of the Business Intelligence Architecture team.
    g. Other related responsibilities as appropriate for a BI Technical Analyst
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories: College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months) 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months) Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months) Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education
  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in relevant area (computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, etc.)
Preferred Experience
  • Two years of experience with relevant platforms (Windows Server, Linux and Oracle).
  • Two years of experience with software application management.
  • Two years of experience with large applications or systems.
  • One year of experience creating and maintaining standardized procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of or ability to develop and understand security structures and hierarchies.
  • Knowledge of or ability to develop and understand analytic queries.
  • Knowledge of workstation and server security mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of data management and administration, such as in data warehousing or data virtualization
  • Knowledge in various business intelligence technologies (e.g., Business Objects, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Data Mining, Dashboards).
  • Knowledge of data virtualization technologies (e.g., Denodo, Informatica Data Virtualization, SAP HANA Cloud, CData).
  • Knowledge of Data Movement/ETL technologies tools (e.g., Informatica, Talend, AWS Data Migration, Skyvia, Fivetran, Stitch).
  • Knowledge of cloud-hosted technologies, such as in data storage or business intelligence.
  • Knowledge of managing technology projects and standard project management techniques.
  • Knowledge of creating and implementing security plans.
  • Knowledge of large, multi-project implementations.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The minimum salary for this position is $75,000 and the salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
