About the College of Dentistry

The University of Illinois Chicago - College of Dentistry (UIC COD) is the largest oral health college in the State of Illinois, provides care for 35,000 patients a year, and has over 500 students seeking dental degrees including DMD, PhD and Master's programs. It a worldwide leader in oral health education, clinical care and research that is patient -centered and evidence-based and employs 650 faculty and staff.

About the Program and Position:
The UIC COD is seeking reliable, enthusiastic, self-starting individuals who are looking to enter the field of oral health as an Extra Help Dental Assistant I and participate in the Fall Cohort of our Dental Assistant Pathway Program. The Spring Cohort will begin in January 2025.

The College of Dentistry was awarded a 3-year grant from the Otho S. A. Sprague Memorial Institute to support the launch of a Dental Assistant Pathway Program (DAPP), an employee training program that provides young adults, community members, and other individuals interested in the oral health field with a pathway to advance their career as a dental assistant. Through a combination of asynchronous online instruction, in-person classroom lectures, and clinical rotations, participants will receive 15 weeks of foundational training that will prepare them for the Dental Assisting National Board Examination while employed at the College of Dentistry as an Extra Help Dental Assistant I - DAPP.

Confidential review of materials and screening of candidates will continue until all 12 program slots are filled.

Review of applications will occur in October 2024. Interviews will occur in October & November 2024 the Program is anticipated to begin in January 2025

Duties:

Participate in the 15 week Dental Assistant Pathway Program.

Provides chair-side and other assistance to dental students in performing routine and surgical procedures including preparing equipment and areas for dental procedures.

Help/assist patients receiving treatment in the clinic in a polite and professional manner which includes assisting them with instructions and screening appointments.

Arranges equipment, pre-tray setups, dental materials and supplies, and patient records. Assists supervisor in the ordering, stocking, inventory and distribution of supplies;ensures supplies and equipment are clean and put away after use. Keep a running inventory of supplies and materials and order as necessary to ensure the areas are always equipped.

Make certain that all units/stations are prepared for patient treatment meeting OSHA requirements. Notifying supervisors of any malfunctioning equipment in need of repairs.
