Job Description

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 166 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.

The District’s mission is, “to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it’s citizens.”

 

Job Summary

 

This position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting, accounting processes and procedures, and projects for the District. The role monitors financial operations, prepares financial statements and reports, coordinates and manages a significant portion of the annual audit(s), assists in budget development and management, and maintains cashflow and funding responsibilities. Additional responsibilities include supporting Finance Department staff with all accounting activities and operations in the accounting and banking systems.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



    • Prepare, reconcile, and review bank and ledger reconciliations, financial statements and reporting, capital assets and related depreciation, and journal entries for the District and its 501©(3) organization.

 

    • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports, including project accounting, investments, and other financial analyses.

 

    • Crosstrain and assist with day-to-day accounting and finance operations, including cashflow needs, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.

 

    • Coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring all financial records are accurate and in compliance with District policies and procedures, and relevant accounting standards including GAAP, GASB, and GAGAS.

 

    • Participate in annual budget development, long-range forecasting, and other projects.

 

    • Assist with implementation of the financial system, accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial information.

 

    • Proactively identify areas to problem solve and autonomously prioritize and execute tasks.

 

    • Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the District’s safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.

 

    • Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.

 

  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; 4-6 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in government accounting, auditing, public accounting, financial analysis; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Public or Business Administration preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Public Finance Officer preferred.
  • Experience with auditing procedures and practices.
  • Ability to efficiently assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Demonstrated success while working independently and collaborating effectively across diverse teams.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain complete, accurate, and organized records.
  • Experience with MS Dynamics Great Plains, BS&A, or other Enterprise Resource Planning systems.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, spreadsheet software packages, and database software.

Schedule: Full Time.

Salary: $79,331.20 – 91,977.60 per year.
