Job Description Summary
The Chaplain will provide counseling, guidance and training to patients, families, and Institute staff regarding spiritual and emotional support to facilitate total patient care.

Job Description

The Chaplain will:
  • Visit patients and their families to provide counseling and guidance to help strengthen their faith and ability to cope with spiritual/emotional challenges accompanying disability or grief.
  • Provide spiritual and emotional support, guidance and counseling to Institute staff regarding patient care concerns.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and conduct interdenominational chapel services and other special worship services.
  • Maintain departmental records including patient progress notes, chapel attendance, weekly schedules and religious service reminders.
  • Participate in team conferences, floor supervisory meetings and other pertinent patient/team related meetings to facilitate interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Act as a resource person and liaison to local pastors, community leaders and chaplains with regard to Institute patients.
  • Co-facilitate support groups when necessary.
  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to the Manager, Chaplaincy

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Master's degree in Divinity or equivalent training in an accredited religious seminary or theological school.
  • Chaplaincy training in clinical pastoral education or equivalent for a minimum of one year or four quarters and endorsement by an Ecclesiastical Judicatory for specialized pastoral care.
  • Must fulfill requirements for certification in a professional Pastoral Care Association belonging to the Commission on Ministry in Specialized Setting (COMISS) within two years of employment and must be certified within three years of employment.
  • Three to six months related experience to handle emotional and spiritual issues involved in dealing with people in crisis situations and to gain the administrative ability to prepare and conduct chapel services. Knowledge of comprehensive rehabilitation in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation preferred.
  • Advanced level of interpersonal skills in conducting counseling sessions and in dealing with emotional and spiritual issues in stressful situations such as disability and/or death. Ability to work with other health care professionals in a team approach to patient care.
  • Analytical ability to identify and determine the cause and resolution of religious and spiritual problems and questions.

Working Conditions
Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
