The Office of the Bursar is a support service department in the Division of Administration and Finance. Within the Office of the Bursar there are four key areas of operation: Accounts Receivable, Cashiering, Account Counseling and OneCard ID Services. Each of these operations provides services and support to NIU students, commercial customers and other NIU departments.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for assisting the Collection Manager with managing staff and the daily operations of the Account Counseling and Collection services within the Office of the Bursar, and enforcing University policies and procedures relevant to assuring payment resolution of Student and Commercial Receivables, and Perkins Loan Accounts. This position works directly with students, parents, and other NIU customers counseling and advising them on issues concerning their financial obligations to the University. Additionally, this position is responsible for maintaining good working relationships with other offices within the University and with vendors and other State and Federal agencies with which NIU does business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Account Counseling
Assists the Collection Manager with managing staff and the daily operations of the Account Counseling and Collection services within the Office of the Bursar
Responsible for delegating work assignments to Account Counselors. Track repayment status and manage follow-up action as needed by Account Counselors which includes outreach to students.
Assist with the approval of payment plan negotiation and reduction of late payment charges with the Account Counselors
Directs course of action of Account Counselors in handling atypical student account situations.
Assists with counseling students and providing viable options to resolve account problems.
Handles difficult situations in person, on the telephone, and through written correspondence concerning student's/customer's problem, inquiries, and concerns.
Consider repayment options of outstanding debts (e.g., tuition, fees, housing contracts, library fines, parking violations, emergency loans, and other student related expenses).

Administrative and Collection Procedures
Assists the Collection Manager with Dunning, State Offset, Bankruptcy Notices, Perkins and all other Collection processes.
Assists with monitoring the effectiveness of policies and procedures for the collection of accounts and recommend/propose changes to the Collection Manager.
Apply knowledge about the collection processes administered by the Office of the Bursar in communications with University and departmental officials/staff, customers and other internal/external personnel on matters related to collection procedures.
Represents the Bursar's Office at student orientations and other campus events.
Perform other duties as assigned
