Senior Research Scientist
Materials Research Laboratory

The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking to hire a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist to work in its cryo-EM (cryogenic electron microscopy) and micro-ED (micro electron diffraction) shared instrumentation core facilities. The Senior Research Scientist will serve as member of the MRL Central Research Facilities staff with a focus on advanced data analysis and research support in these related areas.
The successful candidate will become member of the dedicated staff of approximately 25 scientists and engineers, who maintain major research instruments in the MRL's core facilities for electron microscopy in addition to other cores of shared instrumentation for scanning probe microscopy, laser and optical spectroscopy, surface, thermal and physical properties analysis, x-ray scattering and nanofabrication facilities. Approximately 1,000 researchers from across our campus as well as other academic institutions, industry, and national laboratories use the facilities, logging about 90,000 user hours annually. JOB DUTIES
- Support the cryo-EM (cryogenic electron microscopy) and micro-ED (micron electron diffraction) core of the MRL facilities by working with our various researchers on experimental and data collection strategies, advanced data analysis, and presenting and discussing the findings. Actively support various research programs on campus by providing crystallography and molecular biology data analysis, simulation and fitting, structure determination, refinement, and solution.
- Prepare and deliver primary and advanced training on micro-ED and cryo-EM data analysis to students and researchers in the MRL facilities.
- Work with MRL management and campus researchers to develop funding proposals to support new research initiatives and new instrumentation acquisition and upgrades.
- In cooperation with other MRL staff and campus researchers, participate in instrumentation development and modifications in order to enhance the technical capabilities on campus.
- • Formulate, compile, and distribute suitable suggestions for documentation improvements for collective staff scientist review. Incorporate approved modifications into training documents and procedures. Train new and current users, PIs, and MRL staff on updated safety policies, including procedures for working in both BSL-1 and BSL-2 research environments. This includes the creation of videos and multimedia tutorials.
- Give oral presentations to large audiences, including recording training material for media outlets, and online, live video streaming. Participate in outreach events, including Engineering Open House, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs, or giving presentations not directly affiliated with the MRL. Actively participate in development of EM-related workshops, classroom lectures, and educational instrument demonstrations.
- Participate in the development of, or improvement of existing classroom course material in the areas of crystallography, micro-ED, cryo-EM, etc. Participate in classroom teaching if required and appropriate.
- Crosstrain in other facility techniques to function as backup for other staff members and increase knowledge and experience.
- Perform facility-wide safety tasks as assigned.
- Assume additional appropriate responsibilities to promote the unit's mission as needed.
- Ph.D. in engineering, chemical, biological, physical sciences, or related field.
- Five years of hands-on experience with advanced data analysis in structural biology or crystallography.
- Three years of experience in classroom course development and teaching of related BSc and MSc level courses.
- Proven track record of successful research proposals funding. This includes leading proposal concept, preparation, and post-award management.
- Experience performing and providing basic and advanced training to students and other researchers in crystallography and molecular and cell biology.
- Experience working in a multi-user research facility or national lab supporting research needs for diverse research programs.
- Experience supervising PhD and MSc students.
