Job Summary:
The Department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University is seeking a Research Technologist to support basic and translational studies with a focus to develop efficient immunotherapeutic approaches for brain tumors.This position offers an opportunity to work in the lab of Dr. Irina Balyasnikova, one of only handful of scientists in the world employing this technology for therapeutic targeting of malignant brain tumors. The Balyasnikova lab collaborates extensively with several other neuro-oncology labs, including teams both within Northwestern University and other leading academic medical centers across the United States.
The Research Technologist supports current research in the lab focusing on the development of targeted therapeutics against brain tumor antigens.Specific duties include: conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques.
Please note: Incumbent will spend up to 50% of each shift walking and standing, between research labs and other sterile environments.
Incumbent will spend up to 75% of each shift performing tasks requiring manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
Must be able to lift 20 to 25 lbs. Must be able to work occasional evening, weekend and/or holiday hours.
Must be able to read, write and comprehend English in order to understand signage and to read and update animal health records.
Work space may be small, non-private, and close to other work stations where noise level can be high.
Specific Responsibilities:
Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
Requests laboratory supplies needed to complete work.
Performs general laboratory maintenance, including autoclaving, surgical supply preparation, etc.
Molecular Biology:
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expressionSouthern, Northern, Western blotting
PCR, RT-PCR
Plasmid preparation
Cellular Biology:
Cell culture, cell isolation
Functional studies
Transfection
Animal:
Dissections
Handling & daily supportive care
Dosing techniques (oral gavage, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, etc.)
Drug dose formulations
Histology:
Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
Records test results and may maintain databases.
Completes standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
HS diploma or equivalent and some basic science courses is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field (neuroscience, molecular biology, genetics, etc.)
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and research protocols.
Demonstrated computer proficiency, including spreadsheets and word processing.
Attention to detail.
Precise and accurate record keeping.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Manual dexterity.
Ability to build rapport with faculty and ancillary staff.
Ability to comprehend and critique published scholarly articles.
Familiarity and experience with animal care and tissue culture methods.
Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills.
High familiarity with use of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Above average planning, organization and time management skills.
Target hiring range for this position will be between $18.00-$19.00 per hour.Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
