Job Summary

The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Technical Lab Coordinator, Engineering Student Design Campus position. The Engineering Student Design Campus (ESDC), located in four adjacent Grainger Engineering buildings, supports student fabrication needs for multidisciplinary engineering competitions. The ESDC currently empowers students on national award-winning robotics, model airplane, rocketry, and automotive competition teams. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in the ESDC as they put the theory learned in the classroom into practice. Students are trained by supportive staff to safely use the extensive tools, machining, welding, and fabrication equipment contained in the ESDC.

This position is responsible for assisting the ESDC supervisor in student training, continuous improvement, and day-to-day support of the Engineering Student Design Campus, which currently includes Engineering Student Project Lab (ESPL), Engineering Senior Design Lab (ESDL), ESDL annex, and CIVIL Quonset hut. This work includes, but is not limited to, activities in the machine shop, welding shop, woodworking shop, and sheet metal shop. In addition, this position will provide basic technical advice in preparation for and accompanying students to competition.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist the ESDC Supervisor with machining, tool, equipment, and shop training, supervision, and oversight of students, and assist the ESDC Supervisor with the operations of the Engineering Student Design Campus.
  • Coordinate and assist the ESDC Supervisor in student training in the safe use of shop machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Work with the ESDC Supervisor, College Facilities and Safety Offices, and students to ensure enforcement of safety policies.
  • Continually update safety documents, website, and safety training information for students, based on input provided by College Safety Office and the ESDC Supervisor. Coordinate communication of policies and procedures to students and staff with the aid of the Academic Support Specialist.
  • Conduct regular ESDC walkthroughs to review technical compliance with College, Illinois OSHA, Campus Fire and Building Codes, and Division of Research Safety requirements.
  • Continually identify facilities and equipment related upgrades with ESDC staff and College Facilities and Safety Offices. Work with College Facilities and Safety Offices to have upgrades implemented.
  • Administer PrairieLearn-based and other safety tests with the aid of the Academic Support Specialist.
  • Oversee team roster, and training records with the aid of the Academic Support Specialist.
  • Work with the ESDC Supervisor to continually optimize operations and space utilization.
  • Identify, specify, and coordinate maintenance and facility improvements with the Academic Support Specialist, Administrative Aide, and College Facilities and Safety Offices.
Provide support for occupants and users of the Engineering Student Design Campus
  • Advise students on their projects, especially technical aspects.
  • Drive a truck and trailer for activities such as competitions and practice, and serve as a technical resource/advisor for students.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position AND two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position.
    OR
    Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of machining or welding experience in industry.
  • Experience working with students interested in STEM, and specifically engineering fields.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to operate a truck and trailer.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2408 - Laboratory Manager position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The minimum salary is $70,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Work authorization is not available for this position. The person hired into this role will be expected to regularly work onsite in Champaign-Urbana.
