Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Biology, College of Arts and Sciences, Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time post-doctoral fellow, beginning in Academic Year 2023-2024. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for additional years based on performance and funding. The postdoctoral fellow will study the response of oligodendrocytes to various stress conditions, including ER stress and inflammation. This position will support research in the laboratory of Dr. Yanan Chen, which uses cellular, genetic, and pharmacological approaches to understand the cytoprotective pathways in oligodendrocytes against inflammation and investigate the impact of oligodendrocyte protections on the progression of multiple sclerosis. The position is jointly funded by Loyola's Department of Biology and the National MS Society and provides an ideal opportunity for candidates who are interested in gaining teaching experience while conducting cutting-edge research.
Located on Chicago's vibrantly multicultural North Side, LUC is committed to creating an inclusive, responsive community of faculty, students, and staff. As an urban-based Department of Biology dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from candidates committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines). This search is part of a university-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University's efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The postdoc will work with Dr. Chen to investigate the cytoprotective response pathways in oligodendrocytes in vitro, in a variety of genetic mouse models as well as in mouse models of demyelination. The candidate will be involved in several different aspects of the project, including collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts, giving presentations, and mentoring students. Experimental techniques will include behavioral assessment of mouse models, brain and spinal cord dissection, immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, EM processing, confocal, TEM imaging, and other biochemical and molecular approaches. In addition to lab work, the postdoc will teach one or two courses in the Department of Biology.
