Summary:

The Surgical Clinical Reviewer’s chief responsibility is to oversee and optimize the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and other clinical registries at Rush University System for Health. This is accomplished through close collaboration with the Clinical Data Abstractor, Clinical Quality Program Manager, and QSVA team to ensure reliable data is captured and inputted into the NSQIP database. The role also assists in creation of reports, presentation of data, and dissemination of data for process improvement initiatives within the QSVA team, Department of Surgery, and other applicable Rush entities. The Surgical Clinical Reviewer is responsible for the technical and methodological support of the clinical registry programs at Rush Oak Park Hospital (40%) and Rush Copley Medical Center (60%). The Surgical Clinical Reviewer also works to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and assists with other special projects as may be identified. Responsibilities:

Patient Care Data Management

- Responsible for overseeing the correct identification and inclusion/exclusion of surgical patients based on NSQIP criteria and guidelines completed by the Clinical Data Abstractor.

- Responsible for overseeing reliable collection of pre-operative, operative and post-operative data components for the program completed by the Clinical Data Abstractor.

- Identifies areas for streamlining and process improvement within current data collection methods and collaborates with Clinical Quality Program Manager to initiate and maintain such efforts,

- Responsible for identifying and tracking data trends and reporting to appropriate stakeholders via frequent update reports and communications.

Clinical Registry Participation and Data Software Utilization

- Responsible for overseeing transmission of completed data to the ACS NSQIP portal.

- Responsible for running applicable postoperative occurrence and quality improvement reports on ACS NSQIP portal

- Responsible for utilizing and troubleshooting data collection software (Business Objects) for surgical patient selection and creation of patient-tracking Excel documents.

- Conducts a regular review with the Clinical Quality Program Manager of clinical registries’ progress, costs, and goals to achieve case completion goals.

- May serve on committees and task forces hospital wide.

- Responsible for completion of annual SCR competency exam.

- Attends national conference pertaining to the program as requested.

Patient and Staff Interaction

- Establishes effective working relationship with Clinical Data Abstractor and Clinical Quality Program Manager. Assists Clinical Data Abstractor with 30-day postoperative outreaches to patients and families and serves as a program resource/mentor.

- Establishes effective working relationships with members of the healthcare system especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records, and Information Systems departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program.

- Serves as an educational resource on the ACS NSQIP for internal and external audiences by developing educational material and delivering presentations.

Required Job Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing or healthcare field.

- Current State of Illinois medical or nursing licensure.

- Three (3) or more years of experience in intensive care and/or surgical nursing.

- Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience.

- Epic EMR experience.

- Computer and internet skills and experience required-Excel skills.

- Clinical chart review and abstraction experience.

- Database data entry and/or management experience.

- Ability to interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

- NP, PA, CNL, or CNS preferred

- Knowledge of hospital coding and documentation, DRGs, and ICD10-CM coding preferred

- Demonstrated ability to understand and analyze clinical quality metrics and the drivers of metric performance preferred

- Knowledge of clinical registries, databases, as well as the organizational impact for registry/database measures used in external reporting environment preferred

- Knowledge of programs: Business Objects, Vizient, Maestro, Tableau preferred
