Description:

To provide in-person Spanish interpreting services to patient and their families in ED.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Healthcare Interpreter as Language Support Services:

Assists patients, employees, and visitors wherever interpretation is required at UI Health
Renders correct concepts and meanings between preferred language and English following complexity, clarity, tone, and style from one language into another while upholding the correct rules for grammar and syntax in both languages.
Understands protocol and terminology in the healthcare industry.
Attends professional and/or administrative meetings to keep informed on policies, procedures, practices, and specific patient cases of the medical system.
Provides strict renditions of the messages including every detail of the conversation and must be prepared for challenging assignments at any time.
Honors interpreter code on conduct and interpreter ethical boundaries. for example:

Stays attached from the conversation and remains neutral and objective at all times.
Avoids interaction with LEP without the provider's permission.
Employs good customer service, including but not limiting to:

Excellent communication skills
Clear enunciation
Pleasant and professional voice
Polite forms of expressions
Culturally sensitive
Follows instructions of providers and clarifies any confusion to assure an effective encounter.
Remains calm during assignments in the event that one of the primary speakers is medically challenged, incoherent, distraught, or experiencing an emergency or end of life situation.
Must be available and punctual for encounters, as assigned during entire work shift.
Must report completion of assignment to the office of Language Support Services.
Accountable for entering data and creating reports.
Participates at departmental staff meetings, in-service workshops, enterprise, and community related events, as required.
Provides awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of the LEPs and deaf and hard of hearing as needed.
Assists department with planning. deployment. and troubleshooting of VRI needs.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required:


High school graduation or equivalent.
National Certification from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).
Fluent in at least one non-English language; Spanish, American Sign Language (ASL), Mandarin, Polish, Cantonese, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, etc.
