Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Dean for Education and Curriculum, the appointee will serve as a curriculum development specialist assigned to the curriculum segments and activities in Year 1 of the four-year medical curriculum. This position will work directly with the Director of Doctoring in Carbondale to provide educational resources for faculty and students. In addition, the appointee will provide expertise and assistance to other curriculum as requested, including, but not limited to, writing of patient cases and examination questions, training of standardized patients, and participating in small group sessions.

. Teaching 85 %
A. Work closely with faculty and staff in the Office of Education and Curriculum, the Department of Medical Education, and related basic science and clinical departments to enhance the educational experiences of medical students. This would include recommending and providing assistance with educational content and cases, computer, audio and video tools, clinical resources (faculty, labs, activities), and arranging these activities as appropriate.
B. Train students in basic clinical skills such as working with patients, writing and reviewing history and physicals, oral case presentations.
C. Develop patient problem simulations for presentation in multiple formats (standardized patients, paper simulations, computer simulations).
D. Design, develop and administer clinical case and other performance-based assessments in consultation with clinical and basic science faculty.
E. Perform medical edit of case simulations.
F. Develop program to improve interviewing/communication skills.
G. Participate in small group sessions for assigned students as appropriate.
H. Serve as liaison between faculty and the Associate Dean for Education and Curriculum in case development activities.
I. Help coordinate the Doctoring Curriculum across Carbondale and Springfield.
J. Train standardized patients and perform dry runs for student-patient encounters.
K. Assist in recruitment, screening, and evaluation of standardized patients.
L. Develop/update handouts as well as case worksheets.
M. Instruction, CS, and lecture in Infection Control and Sexual History.
N. Assist in grading History & Physicals as well as Financial Histories.
III. Research 5 %

A. Work with Doctoring to design and implement studies of educational and curricular issues.
B. Design and implement independent research projects pertaining to individual clinical and educational interests.
IV. Service 10 %

A. Represent the Office of Education and Curriculum at local, regional and national meetings as appropriate.
B. Provide speaking engagements as requested.
D. Participates in meetings, trainings and other environmental and health and safety activities as required by SIU School of Medicine.
E. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A. Master's Degree in a health care profession and five years of clinical experience with educational responsibility.
B. Good organizational skills and good problem-solving ability.
C. Ability to work in close association with clinical and basic science faculty.
D. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
E. Experience in the clinical medicine setting.
F. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
