Duties and Responsibilities 
 Loyola University Chicago (Loyola) seeks nominations and applications to identify progressive, flexible, and collaborative candidates for the position of Associate Dean, University Libraries and Head, Health Sciences Library (HSL). The successful candidate must be a strong advocate for the library, committed to implementing strategic and innovative approaches that respond to the dynamic academic knowledge environment, and have a clear understanding of the major challenges facing libraries in a time of complex transition. This position will oversee the Health Sciences Library, provide leadership throughout the University Libraries as a whole, establish and maintain collaborative partnerships across campuses, and engage with local community and clinical partners to develop a range of user-centered services in support of students, faculty, and staff in the schools, departments, and clinical units on the Health Sciences Campus. At Loyola, Librarian is a special faculty position.

 

Responsibilities

 

Reporting to the Dean, University Libraries, this position will have the following responsibilities:

 

Leadership, Administration and Planning


Participate as a member of the University Libraries administrative team in shaping strategic initiatives, establishing priorities, assessing outcomes, and accomplishing the vision, in alignment with the University's strategic plan;
Share responsibility with other members of the administrative team for policy formulation, resource allocation, and organizational development;
Serve as a steward of Loyola's finances and negotiate the most cost-effective terms for resources;
Manage and provide leadership, hands-on support and mentorship to HSL employees;
Honor Loyola's values by consistently promoting teamwork, respect, diversity, social justice, and inclusion within the Libraries, the HSL, and the HSC communities.

 

 

Subject Matter Expertise and Program Development


Demonstrate a deep understanding of the health sciences population (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) and their resource and service needs;
Possess expertise and familiarity with common health sciences resources and the field's largest vendors;
Develop and implement user-focused programs to advance information literacy and mastery among students, faculty and researchers in medicine, nursing and other health sciences disciplines;
Create a programmatic vision for library services aligned with the evolving needs of medical and health sciences education, research, and patient care.

 


Internal and External Collaborations


Prioritize stakeholder engagement with clinical sciences, scholarly communication, research productivity, and service to the HSC;
Maintain professional growth and development by collaborating with researchers inside and outside the Libraries;
Build relationships and proactively reach out to connect and advocate for the HSL with relevant faculty, staff, students, clinical partners, and academic administrators;
Collaborate closely with the HSL staff to provide exemplary customer service, develop programming and projects, and ensure smooth library operations.
Qualifications 
 Required Qualifications


Master's degree or above from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or in a relevant discipline or professional area;
Demonstrated successful, progressively responsible professional experience in a health sciences library, academic library, or other research library environment, with evidence of effectively working both solo and as part of a team and setting goals and priorities;
At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or clinical research institution, preferably in a health or life sciences setting, with supervisory experience, strategic delegation, and mentoring.
