Job Summary
Location: System Float Pool

The House Administrator functions in the absence of the Associate Nurse Executive in providing direction and administrative leadership to hospital staff during the evening or night shifts, weekends and/or holidays. This position functions autonomously making operational decisions, resolving discrepancies, and responding to hospital-wide emergencies. All decisions and actions are within the established Cook County Health and Hospital Systems guidelines and standards for patient care.
This position is exempt from Career Service under the CCH Personnel Rules.
Typical Duties
Conducts hospital rounds, investigates problems, complaints, and policy violations, documenting incidents and taking appropriate action to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the respective CCH Hospital campus.
Follows up as necessary, with patient complaints, quality, or process problems, and make recommendations for future preventative measures.
Serves as the first line of authority in settling employee disputes during off hours.
Serves as an administrative and communication liaison between departments and with external agencies.
Patient Care and Process
Reviews patient census information to facilitate timely discharges and admissions, to approve or authorize patient transports or transfers to other medical facilities, and to make changes to staffing. These decisions have a direct impact on hospital revenue.
Provides guidance and assistance to hospital staff on all sentinel events.
Functions as a facilitator, coordinates repairs, and secures equipment form outside vendors in the event of life support equipment malfunctions.
Intervenes and seeks corrections if patients sign out against medical advice or abscond.
Intervenes in incidents involving the management of potentially violent patients.
Evaluates and approves the release of patient valuables and sign off on all checks issued by the hospital cashier.
Authorizes visitor pass requests and exceptions to visitor policy. Has authority to restrict visitor rights for safety reasons.
Works collaboratively with the Department of Language, Speech and Hearing Services and Department of Interpreter Services to secure interpreter services from agencies outside the Hospital.
Approves retrieval and release of medical records for outside agencies.
Address patient and family concerns regarding patient care issues.
Typical Duties continued
Emergency Response Disaster, Fire and Safety:
Designated as the Incident Commander for the hospital in all internal and external emergencies during off shifts. This includes the following events: Code Pink-Infant /Child Abductions, Internal Emergencies requiring Relocation/Evacuation.
Initiates Emergency Response Procedures and activates the Emergency Management System for External Emergencies, including all drills for Homeland Security response plans, Hazardous Materials Response Plans, Fire, and Post-Operative Recovery Power. During an emergency may authorize the use of equipment that would otherwise be unauthorized.
Collaborates with Public Affairs on all newsworthy events.
Ensures the infant security system is operable and makes arrangements for repairs, when necessary.
Intervenes when an immediate threat to life or health, damage to equipment or buildings is posed that could result in the injury of patients, visitors or staff.
Assumes leadership responsibilities in incidents involving the hospital being placed on Full or Partial By-Pass, or Diversion.
Performs other related duties as required.

Reports to the Associate Nurse Executive


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a college or university.
Must be licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois.
Minimum five (5) years of nursing experience.
Minimum three (3) years of experience in nursing supervision/management or hospital administration with experience in dealing with staffing shortages, nursing personnel issues, resolving patient flow problems, and responding to facilities emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in nursing or Health Administration
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies, contractual agreements, and regulatory standards.
Knowledge of physical layout of all buildings on the complex including their floor plans, fire and utility systems is required.
Knowledge of hospital chain of command and appropriate channels of authority.
