MASON INSPECTOR

DEPARTMENT OF WATER MANAGEMENT

Number of Positions: 4

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Salary: $9,926.80/Monthly; Grade: PR

These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City’s collective bargaining agreement with BRICKLAYERS LOCAL 21 ( BARGAINING UNIT 49).

Under supervision, inspects sewer construction, catch basin, and drain work for conformance to approved specifications and plans, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Inspects sewer construction work, sewers, and related brick structures for compliance with approved plans and

specifications

· Ensures that materials used during construction meet specifications and are in accordance with municipal code

· Perform inspections of sewer outfalls as required, including occasional inspections made from a boat

· Records locations of connections to sewers and related structures from property lines for inclusion into permanent

departmental records

· Monitors and records progress of work performed by private contractors and prepares reports upon completion

· Prepares report and maintains records of inspection conducted

· Inspects underground installations and construction work by utilities to ensure that the integrity of the sewer system

is not compromised

· Reviews construction design drawings and specifications for building envelope construction requirements

· Conducts inspections on the exterior envelope, walls, windows and thermal moisture protection elements during all

phases of construction

· Inspects designated areas for excavations on private property or the public way to ensure permit requirements are

met

· Performs inspections on existing buildings and other building envelopes assets to diagnose building envelope

deficiencies

· Reports hazardous street conditions to proper authorities for further investigation

· Performs various physical tasks related to the duties of the position

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered bricklayer apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required; Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Substantial lifting (up to 50 pounds) is required

· Ability to walk and stand for an extended or continuous periods of time

· Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools

· Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one’s body, arms, and/or leg

· Ability to move one’s hands and arms to grasp or manipulate objects

WORKING CONDITIONS

· Exposure to loud noise, fumes or dust

· Exposure to outdoor weather conditions

· Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., construction sites, heavy machinery)

· Work performed above or below ground level

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully pass skills assessment tests and complete an interview. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after the test results have been analyzed and compiled. The candidates that receive a passing score on the skills assessment test will be invited to interview for the position. Candidate(s) receiving a passing score on the test and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral interview, will be selected.

Preference will be given to external candidates possessing the following:

· 5 years of repairs, maintenance and/or installation of brick related structures
