Primary Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the duties necessary to maintain and ensure reliable operation of the Water Quality laboratory, and other production duties. The successful candidate must be able to pass Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) certification.

Key Accountabilities

  • Maintaining IDPH laboratory certification - by thoroughly reading, understanding, and adhering to Title 77 IL Administrative Code Part 465;
  • Performing monthly lab safety checks;
  • Bacteriological sampling, analysis, assessment, and reporting- by carefully following Illinois EPA requirements for our systems and other systems that we do analyses for, ensuring that there are no Notice of Violations;
  • Collecting samples and analyzing them for plant improvement projects. Any and all sampling and testing related to compliance and/or process sampling;
  • Seasonal Atrazine sampling and analysis to determine appropriate treatment for removal of organics;
  • Monthly, quarterly, annual, and triennial chemical, and radiological sampling - independently following Illinois EPA web-schedules and Belleville Lab schedules, ensuring that there are no Notice of Violations;
  • Ordering and maintaining inventory of treatment and lab chemicals - including being responsible for performing all SAP transactions monthly and including receiving chemical deliveries and issuing accurate usage updates on a weekly basis;
  • Processing P-card transactions at least twice a month;
  • Understanding and adhering to all lab safety protocols. This includes chemical hygiene best practices, being able to read and understand SDS and SDS record keeping;
  • Ordering and maintaining inventory of bacteriological and chemical laboratory materials while adhering to the approved budget;
  • Maintain a professional relationship with vendors by corresponding with them about orders, load schedule changes, and invoicing issues;
  • Accurately preparing reports for IEPA monthly reporting within the necessary time frame;
  • Quality Control of New Main Construction. Bacteriological sampling, analysis, assessment, and reporting;
  • Boil Orders - following IEPA requirements for our systems and other systems that we do analyses for, reporting to regulatory agencies in a timely manner, and bacteriological sampling;
  • Assisting plant operators with testing problems including troubleshooting and calibrations;
  • Computer input and form development, using SAP, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access programs, and be capable of learning new programs;
  • Communicating with other lab personnel via email, phone, and text to coordinate sampling, testing, and other lab duties;
  • Cleaning, calibrating, and maintaining the laboratory, the laboratory equipment, and instrumentation. Making standards and other chemical solutions required by the WQ Lab, GC Lab, and the Mini Lab;
  • Any other duties assigned by management.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Valid driver's license required with the ability to pass a motor vehicle report.
  • Towards the end of the break-in period, the successful candidate must pass an examination by an officer of the IDPH certification unit, and pass Performance Evaluation tests.
  • The tests and certifications will have to be renewed as required by the EPA and IDPH requirements

Skills

  • Strong work ethic, time management, organizational and team membership skills.
  • Ability to communicate well and work with minimal supervision.
  • Capability of walking and/or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Aptitude for evaluation and repairing laboratory equipment.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Aptitude for learning and applying chemical and bacteriological techniques, and for handling delicate equipment.
  • Ability to learn advanced computer operations.
  • Strong chemistry, math, recordkeeping, and computer skills are necessary in this position. It is extremely important that the individual in this position be analytical-minded, enjoy detail work, and be able to conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner.
  • The individual needs to be a self-starter, be able to work independently, have good interpersonal communication skills, and enjoy problem solving.

Shift/Hours

  • The scheduled hours of work are forty (40) per week.
  • The shifts are Tuesday - Friday 1:00pm until 9:30pm Saturday 7:00am until 3:30pm

Experience/Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
