Job Summary

Under direct supervision, the Network Technician will assist in supporting the University network infrastructure, (e.g. WAN/LAN, routers, switches, wireless access points) as well as physical server and appliances. Performs routine IT activities to install and connect hardware. Updates documentation including cable/fiber optic database and Wiki systems.

Responsibilities
  • Installs and supports network cabling and other networking equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points, and UPS.
  • Works with Network Engineers or Administrators in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting of network connected end-user hardware, and peripheral devices.
  • Works with Wireless Engineers to install and turn-up the WiFi APs from standardized processes.
  • Conducts WiFi site visits for client troubleshooting.
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots user connectivity.
  • Troubleshoots incidents and resolves tasks to minimize downtime.
  • Tracks issues to resolution updating the internal knowledgebase and/or communicating findings with relevant business units. Follows workflows for escalations when escalating problems to appropriate support groups through the IT service management system. Escalates more involved incidents to the appropriate service owner or problem manager. Combines related incidents that have become problems and address or escalate those holistically.
  • Updates daily status reports and shift handover reports. Acts as a liaison between customers and technical escalation teams by coordinating installation and maintenance services. Maintains communications with customers during the problem resolution process. Provides a single view to the organization for information technology related questions, requests, and problems. Follows proper standard operating procedures.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Education:
  • College degree in a related field.

Experience:
  • Supporting end user endpoints in an enterprise environment.
  • Installing and supporting network hardware.
  • Installing and supporting ethernet and fiber optic cabling.
  • Hands-on experience with WiFi networks and network installation.
  • Hands-on experience with various wireless endpoints - PCs, tablets, mobile and smart/IoT devices.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:
  • Experience with network monitoring solutions.

Preferred Competencies
  • Convey basic network concepts to clients and IT partners.
  • Handle a workload that is not necessarily predictable and may come with peaks and valleys.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills.

  • Respond to phone calls for network emergencies, which may come at any time.
  • Some evening/weekend work.
  • On-call rotation.
