Job Summary
Under the direction of the Chair of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, the Attending Physician performs professional work in medical, educational and research activities. The Attending Physician is an expert in the care and treatment of patients with cancer and various benign and malignant hematological disorders providing knowledgeable, compassionate, and holistic care to the patients they serve. Provides inpatient and outpatient and consultative care in hematology. Participates in clinical trials to investigate new and better treatment strategies for patients with hematological disease. The Attending Physician will be credentialed in Hematology at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Provident Hospitals of Cook County Health (CCH). Ambulatory services may include clinical work at ambulatory sites other than the central campus.

Typical Duties
*Provides inpatient, outpatient, and consultative care in the hematology and supervising trainees throughout CCH
*Supervises and trains hematology subspecialty fellows. Supervises and trains rotating residents and medical students. Supervises and collaborates with hematology/oncology nurse clinicians
*Sets standards and ensures the provision of consistent high-quality care to patients with hematology disorders by educating, assisting, and guiding primary care physicians
*Supervises Infusion Center chemotherapy nursing staff. Maintains accurate medical records. Maintains accurate and timely completion of billing encounter forms
*Participates in the division performance improvement program and departmental and hospital performance improvement activities
*Attends meetings and participates on committees as assigned
*Performs other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications
* Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
*Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois (or have the ability to obtain license prior to employment)
*Current DEA license or the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
*Current Illinois Controlled Substance License or the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
*Board certification or Board eligibility by American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in a Hematology subspecialty or must obtain Board Certification within in one (1) year of starting this employment

Preferred Qualifications
* Experience in diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant hematological disorders
*Experience with participation in NCI sponsored clinical trials
*Bilingual

*Excellent clinical and technical skills necessary to evaluate and mentor fellows and residents
*Excellent written and oral communication skills necessary to communicate with a diverse student and patient population, educational administrators, and all levels of personnel within a highly complex health care system.
*Strong interpersonal skills necessary to work collaboratively with all levels of health care staff and education practitioners.
*Skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
*Ability to work and make sound judgments in a stressful and fast paced environment.
*Ability to prioritize, plan and organize projects and tasks while meeting deadlines.
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast paced and stressful environment
Ability to adhere to System, hospital and department policies and standards
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged
Ability to train by presenting concepts and demonstrating tasks
Good physical and mental health
Ability to see and hear clearly (including with correction)
*Ability to follow hospital protocol when exposed to noise, chemicals, disease, blood borne pathogens, patient violence and procedural injuries
*Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays as needed
