Responsibilities The Marion VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Chemotherapy Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Medicine Specialty Clinics within Nursing Service located in Marion, IL. The Oncology Infusion Clinic RN monitors and patient response to acute and chronic processes based on Nursing Practice Standards, including monitoring lab results and other clinical data. The incumbent collaborates with patients to assess and identify needs, issues, care goals, and resources in achieving desired outcomes related to diagnosis, post hospital recovery and health maintenance/wellness in developing the patient-driven holistic care plan. and provides specialized nursing care to acute and chronically ill patients with a multitude of diagnoses. The incumbent functions in accordance with established standards, hospital policies and procedures. Common duties include, but are not limited to: – The incumbent uses the nursing process and evidence- based practice to collaborate with the core team (patient, specialty care provider, Primary Aligned Care Team, Clerical Associate) and families. – Recognizes emergency situations and demonstrates effective action in emergencies. – Utilizes patient information databases to identify at-risk Veterans requiring coordination of care, utilization of and participation in shared medical appointments, and use of decision support tools. – Utilizes appropriate resources, such as, Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) to provide efficient and effective patient care. – Functions independently and demonstrates the ability to assign, organize, and delegate assessed needs to other members of the interdisciplinary team and peers. – Demonstrates excellent communication skills in communicating with patient, family, co-workers and interdisciplinary team members. Ensures excellent customer service. – Performs basic physical and psychosocial assessment of patients arriving in the Oncology, Chemotherapy, and Infusion Clinics. – Proceeds with chemotherapy administration if patient meets ordered parameters or, if there are concerns contact provider before proceeding. Demonstrates knowledge of vascular access types; to include peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV), peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), centrally inserted central catheter (CICC), and implanted venous ports (Port-A-Cath) and medication and actions. – Administer IV fluid and other ordered therapeutic regimens as ordered. – Plan and coordinate health education related to chemotherapy and infusions, including but not limited to home care following chemotherapy or infusions, vascular access types, neutropenic precautions and how to access care on off tours and weekends – Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Nurse Manager and/or Nurse Manager. The nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). PLEASE NOTE: These positions require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. If selected, Applicants will provide proof of current certifications prior to employment. Only BLS certification which included Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and ACLS certification obtained from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or the Military Treatment Training Network (MTN) will be accepted. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
