Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reporting to the clinical manager or designee, with accountability to the other caregivers enters department specific patient treatments/charges to facilitate management of the patient healthcare record. Assists the care team in coordinating patient activities and services. Assists in coordinating communication and resources between care team, physicians, patients and family members. In ancillary areas, may coordinate and schedule department specific patient procedures in the hospital's scheduling system.

REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS: (

Analyzes documents to ensure department specific requirements have been met prior to entering equipment orders or sending appropriate documents to HIM for scanning. Continually updates electronic medical information vital for patient care. When applicable ensures unit specific patient charges are entered into the appropriate information system.

Triages physician and inter-department questions and resolves or refers to appropriate staff as needed. Maintains accurate records of unit patient census and collaborates with care team on bed or treatment room assignments and related issues as directed.

Provides administrative support including photocopying or electronic transmission of medical information to physicians, contacting physicians offices, pharmacy, and coordinates with other departments to facilitate patient care and record keeping. Monitors printers, facsimile machines, and tube stations as directed and distributes information to care team members as appropriate.

Assists in supporting unit patient flow activities such as patient discharge arrangements including pre-screens, transport services, record retrieval, etc. as directed by the Clinical Manager/Coordinator. Obtains confirmation of diagnostic or medical appointments. Participates in customer service initiatives utilized the AIDET approach. May conduct customer service follow-up calls to discharged patients.

Performs customer service support functions as needed which includes greeting and directing customers, answering telephones and call systems, transporting medications which are not controlled substances, and maintaining unit/area supplies and specialty equipment. May be authorized to access secured medication storage locations to perform job related functions. In ancillary departments, escorts patients to treatment areas.

Provides for care of equipment and supplies on unit as assigned.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships. Acts with integrity, consistency and respect for differing views. Identifies factors that interfere with effective team functioning and contributes in a resolution. Treats each individual with compassion, respect and integrity.

Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, Care Team members and other departments.

The ability to accurately perform multiple tasks simultaneously in an environment with interruptions under minimal supervision.

The organization skills to continually re-prioritize workload based on volume and patient care needs.

The verbal and written English skills necessary to clearly and effectively communicate information.

KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE/REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

The level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of High School or the equivalent.

Minimum one-year data or order entry experience using a computer preferred.

Computer literacy and experience with PC applications.

Experience working in a healthcare setting and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
