Position Overview

One North is a certified Figma Signature Service Partner, and we consult with the world’s largest brands and their design systems. We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Design System Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in driving the development and evolution of our design system and Figma capabilities. This individual will consult with our clients to ensure consistency, scalability, and efficiency across all their design system and digital products. The ideal candidate will bring expert proficiency in Figma, a deep understanding of design systems, and a passion for creating exceptional user experiences.

This role will ideally be based in the Chicagoland area, but we are open to other U.S. locations.

Responsibilities

- Define and drive the product design strategy aligned with client goals and industry trends.

- Foster a culture of technical design excellence and multi-disciplinary collaboration.

- Champion the use of Figma, providing expertise and training to the design team, setting standards and training on new features.

- Develop advanced Figma components and templates that streamline the design and development process.

- Design and build custom Figma plugins to enhance productivity and automate repetitive tasks.

- Ensure consistency and adherence to design system principles throughout the organization.

- Conduct thorough audits of existing design components and propose optimizations and enhancements.

- Champion best practices for design system governance, versioning, and documentation.

- Act as a mentor and subject matter expert for other members of the design and front-end development team.

- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including developers, strategists, and project managers.

- Partner with clients to understand their business objectives and current challenges and work to devise solutions for them.

- Work with other agency leaders to develop offerings and capabilities around product design.

- Work closely with Client Services to plan project deliverables and the client approach.

- Oversee the end-to-end design process from ideation and prototyping to final implementation, ensuring high-quality deliverables.

- Stay informed about emerging design trends, technologies, and tools to continuously improve design practices and methodologies.

- Assist in new business development opportunities.

- Work with design and agency leadership to expand our design capabilities and areas of excellence.

- An expert understanding of design fundamentals, design systems, user-centered design processes, and front-end engineering.

- Expert proficiency in Figma with a strong portfolio showcasing your Figma skills and design system contributions.

- A demonstrated ability to build complex Figma components and templates that reflect best practices in UI/UX design and front-end engineering.

- Experience developing and deploying Figma plugins.

- Strong analytical skills with a keen attention to detail and a passion for solving complex design challenges.

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

- A background in conducting user research, usability testing, and data-driven design decisions.

- A passion for mentoring and developing talent, with a commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture.

- An ability to manage multiple clients and projects ranging in size and scope simultaneously.

- A self-starter mentality, pushing the vision for our organization and clients.

Your weapons (wield them wisely):

- Master’s degree in UX, CS, or HCI preferred (or relevant work experience)

- Proven experience (8 or more years) in product design, specifically design systems, with a strong portfolio showcasing impactful digital projects and leadership capabilities

- Expertise in developing and maintaining design systems, with a deep understanding of component-based design

- Advanced skills in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, and other design and prototyping tools

- Strong knowledge of UX/UI principles and best practices, with a focus on user-centered design methodologies

- Contributions to open-source projects related to design systems or Figma plugins

- Knowledge of design tokens and modern front-end frameworks

- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts and rationale to stakeholders

- Exceptional fundamental visual design skills (e.g., typography, color, layout)

- Eye for detail and high personal standards
