About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC): Responsibilities Set up and operate upset forging machines. Set up and operate 1,000 pounds to 12,000-pound steam, pneumatic, and hydraulic hammers. Program preheated furnaces to required temperatures. Forge a variety of metal parts from ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Metal Forger ~ without more than normal supervision. 1) Read drawings/blueprints; 2) Set up hammers under close guidance; 3) Set the controllers for furnaces 4) Blowing scale and lubricant- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Work assignments involve standing, walking, stooping, bending, and kneeling and may be done in awkward positions. Continually handles objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing up to 100 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in area of heat treat furnaces where temperatures may be above average. Is constantly exposed to the possibility of severe burns due to abnormally higher temperatures reached by metals from forging and being heated in furnaces. Work is in dirty area where the noise constantly reaches a level which is difficult to talk over. Wears a variety of Personal Protective Equipment to ensure safety. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone – no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
