The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (https://nres.illinois.edu) is seeking qualified applicants for a position as a Research Specialist in Fort Cavazos, Texas.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct Research:
    • Conduct avian research conducted at Fort Cavazos, including monitoring of pollinators, pest insects, and migratory birds.
    • Data stewardship: in addition to collecting data for the feral hog control program, the individual will be responsible for sharing in the archiving data, quality control of the data, and integration between data sets. Coordinating with research entities that are collaborating with the Army regarding data being collected for ongoing and upcoming studies.
    • Writing annual scientific reports and submitting permits.
    • Collaborate with other groups at Fort Cavazos and the Army to achieve the overall objectives of the grant between the U of I and Fort Cavazos.
  • Research Management:
    • Equipment management: maintain inventory of the supplies needed to conduct feral hog control.
    • Vehicle management (making sure the fleet to operational).
    • Technology management: maintain, update, and troubleshoot camera and trap systems as well as cellular applications used for the feral hog control program.
    • Assumes additional duties to further the mission of the College as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

• BS in ecology or an equivalent degree.

• 2 years of experience monitoring biodiversity on an Army installation.

• Experience trapping feral hogs and using Jager Pro to operate corral traps.

Preferred Qualifications

• Good writing and communication skills.

• Experience producing reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of activities on army installations.
  • Ability to curate data in MS Excel.
  • Ability to analyze data in program R.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to multitask (managing multiple projects at the same time).
  • Deployment of feral hog corrals as part of a team.
  • Collecting location data and trapping data using common software as well as specialized phone applications.
  • Collecting biological samples and data from feral hogs.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible on or after August 16 th, 2024. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for the position is $52,000 to $58,000.
