Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance.
Reporting to the Director, Civil Engineering, the Bridge Inspector examines the condition of Metra's bridges and assesses their ability to safely carry loads and forces, detects and records conditions that may cause immediate or future distress, recommends repairs and determines scheduling based on the extent of repairs required, and authorizes or restricts railroad traffic over structures
The primary duties include:
Inspect steel, concrete, and timber bridges for compliance with bridge safety standards; record findings; and collaborate with engineering staff on the scope and priority of work to be performed.
Inform B&B Supervisor of repair work needed on bridges and monitor and report on the progress of repairs.
Respond to incidents involving bridge structures by inspecting the structure, assessing damage and structural integrity, and working with staff to determine the extent of repairs needed if structural integrity is compromised.
Prepare tasks list of emergency repairs to be completed by contractor, calculate estimate costs, complete work authorization documents, and approve payment.
Participate in the annual federal audit of the Bridge Inspection Program by conducting independent inspections, comparing findings against bridge inspection reports, and completing and maintaining required documentation.
Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment.
Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

1. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering OR in lieu of specified degree, a combination of education and structural inspection or bridge repair experience that equals four years.
2. In addition to #1, must have five years of structural inspection or bridge repair experience.
3. Good knowledge of:
techniques and tools used in conducting bridge inspections.
components, materials, processes, and costs associated with repairing bridges, retaining walls, and related structures.
federal, state, and local bridge safety standards, laws, and codes.
4. Good:

able to operate a vehicle and be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.
Preferences:
Bridge Safety Inspection Certification.
