Job Description:

The U.S. Tax Operations Director will provide oversight, leadership, and development of the U.S. Tax Operations team, under general supervision of the Senior Director, Global Tax Reporting. This person will work cross-functionally and collaborate closely across the corporate tax team, finance and business unit leaders to support and operationalize tax and business strategies. The position will focus on developing and leading the U.S. Market team, an eye on continuous process and technology improvements, and partnering internally and externally to drive desired outcomes.

Responsibilities

+ Work cross functionally to lead U.S. market tax compliance, financial reporting, and tax controversy

+ Accountable for management and review of all U.S. tax returns and financial accounting

+ Be responsible for outside advisors on indirect tax matters

+ Partner with finance and external advisors on various initiatives

+ Lead tax processes and technology to align with tax department needs and objectives

+ Develop process excellence and continuous improvement procedures

+ Foster an environment of inclusive behaviors through effective communication and strong leadership skills

+ Build and develop strong relationships across the business

Essential Functions

Tax Operations:

+ Direct, manage and develop the team function through stakeholder and team engagement, business understanding, and tax technical prominence

+ Train and mentor the U members and team with other department leaders to improve employee engagement and provide opportunities for growth

+ Optimize all internal and external resources and processes to ensure that all actions required to provide deliverables are properly planned, executed, and delivered

Corporate Tax Reporting:

+ Direct all U.S. Corporate Federal and State reporting including direct and indirect (e.g., sales, use, property, unclaimed property and all business tax filings) tax compliance

+ Direct all tax financial reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis inclusive o;f interaction with internal and external financial auditors, review of U.S. Schedule M calculations including return to provision analysis, ensure proper current and deferred income tax expense, effective tax rate and income tax balance sheet reporting for the U.S. Market

+ Ensure timely delivery of tax forecasts and effective tax rate analysis when required

+ Responsible for well-documented and effective internal controls over U.S. tax processes, and ensuring compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements for the U.S. market

Business Advisement:

+ Understand McDonald’s operations to be in optimal position to provide tax advice to business partners

+ Build and maintain relationships with key business stakeholders and provide proactive business advisement

Tax Digitalization:

+ Ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to identification, recommendation and integration of tax technology implementations, automation, data wrangling, and analytics to create process and business partner value

+ Represents tax on any key finance or IT initiatives involving changes to processes or systems used outside of the tax function

+ Provide proper training and guidance to U.S. tax team on improving processes and effectively using existing tax systems and tools, promote continuous improvement

Tax Strategy Implementation:

+ Provide vital insight and Tax Operations expertise to the Tax Planning team, engage, and align with them to ensure seamless integration of tax planning and business development opportunities

+ Lead identification and optimization of U.S. Federal and State incentives

+ Provide support to stakeholders to enable proper financial reporting of acquisitions, structuring and restructurings

+ Ensure proper tax reporting (including Federal and state disclosures) of all tax planning and business development initiatives including discussions with internal and external auditors

Tax Risk Assessment and Mitigation:

+ Responsible for ongoing assessment of risk profile and tax risk memos for key U.S. risks

+ Develop and maintain audit ready documentation and support for IRS IDR responses, collaborate with Senior Manager of Tax Controversy on IRS audits

+ Ensure all State audits are appropriately managed

Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA license, Masters in Tax or JD with LLM in Taxation preferred

+ 10+ years of experience in public accounting and/or multinational corporate tax department

+ Requires 5+ years supervisory or management experience with demonstrated ability to generate team engagement, collaboration, development, credibility, and commitment

+ Strong technical knowledge with experience covering a broad range of complex U.S. Federal, State, and International tax matters, with solid understanding of international (TCJA and FTC) and extensive experience with tax accounting

+ Outstanding project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities

+ Exceptional business communication skills, ability to build relationships and collaborate extensively with key business partners and stakeholders

+ Self-starter, ability to lead and motivate people
