The new Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for the position of Director of Administration and Operations to serve as the chief operating officer, providing strategic leadership and planning of fiscal resources, finance functions, research administration, facilities management, and human resource management.
The new school will assume all the degree programs, faculty, staff, operations, and facilities of the Department of Computer Science, including the top #5 ranked computer science undergraduate and graduate programs, and the cross-campus partnerships involved in the nation-leading CS+X and X+DS blended degree programs. The new school will build on Grainger Engineering's legacy of computing innovation, which is evidenced by our role in developing the first modern web browser, PayPal, YouTube, Yelp and many more. Duties & Responsibilities

Financial, Sponsored Research, and Facilities Administration:
  • Responsible for and oversee all administrative operations related to the school's finances, research enterprise, facilities, safety, and space utilization, ensuring compliance with university policies, procedures, and relevant state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Direct and supervise staff in the areas of finance, sponsored research, and facilities, which includes: delegation of duties/responsibilities; prioritizing workloads to ensure deadlines are met and urgent matters are addressed in a timely manner; monitoring productivity; and overseeing progress of short- and long-term school objectives and goals.
  • Identify and implement process improvements. Develop and implement school policies for the maintenance and management of accounts, prepare reports and analyses relating to budgets. Oversee school contracts and affiliation agreements, ensuring university policy is followed.
  • Work closely with the director of the school and the facilities operations team regarding the strategic planning process for facility improvement, remodeling projects, and space allocation.
  • Oversee responses to and participation in audit-related matters and compliance requests, both internal and external.
School Leadership:
  • Serve as a member of the school's leadership team. Lead financial planning of and participate in all strategic planning activities. Work closely with the dean's office, engineering business managers, engineering human resources, and university administrative and business offices.
  • Serve as the school contact with various college and campus offices and divisions for various administrative functions.
  • Serve as the school director's designee in a variety of administrative matters with signature authority for business and human resource functions.
  • Serve on school, college, campus, and/or university committees.
Organizational & Human Resources Administration:
  • Provide counsel to school director and faculty regarding human resources matters, including handling personnel issues, advising on recruitment and staffing needs, and coordinating with the embedded college-wide human resource shared service operation for appointments, payroll, and compliance functions of the school.
  • Oversee the financial aspect of hiring staff and determining salary recommendations with, and/or on behalf of, the school director.
  • Prepare reports and analyses relating to organizational planning needs and human resource matters.
Perform additional appropriate duties to further the mission of the school.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • At least 3-5 years management experience involving administration, fiscal, personnel, and general organizational responsibilities within a large and complex organization with a high volume/time-sensitive workload.
  • Commitment to shared decision-making and experience working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Supervisory experience and/or human resources background.
  • Demonstrated experience with the use of standard office technology and similar management tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a business-related area, preferably business administration, accounting, or finance.
  • CPA designation.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in a land-grant university system.
  • Direct experience and knowledge of University of Illinois business and accounting systems, as well as business processes, including human resources, procurement, payables, receivables, and policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with multiple sources of funds, including state, federal, gift, self-supporting, and ICR.
  • Experience in facilities management in an institutional setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written/oral communications, interpersonal and teamwork skills essential.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, confidentiality, discretion, and sound independent judgment.
  • Skilled in conflict management and resolution.
  • Ability to interact effectively with faculty, students, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The minimum salary is $120,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site as needed. Work authorization is not available for this position.
