About the Department

The TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health at the University of Chicago develops, tests, and implements evidence-based interventions designed to promote very young children's cognitive and social-emotional development, with a priority placed on that of children living in poverty. TMW Center interventions are designed to be overlaid onto existing health, education, and social service systems working at scale in a given community in order to meet families where they already are. The TMW Center has a robust research and development strategy that includes further development and testing of TMW interventions; harnessing technology to support behavior change, intervention engagement, and analysis; and furthering strategies to engage adult caregivers (parents, early educators and others) in the TMW Center's interventions across the health, early learning, and social service sectors.

Job Summary

The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects for the Thirty Million Words Center for Early Learning + Public Health. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains IRB staff lists for all TMW protocols, including submitting personnel amendments when new staff/students join or leave the Center.
  • Monitors CITI status for all staff and ensures individuals renew their certification as required.
  • Supports consents, survey distribution, tracking, and incentives payments for study participants.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of REDCap projects for data collection across TMW projects.
  • Codes existing TMW Center videos according to specified criteria and coding schemes in ELAN.
  • Updates coding progress in shared coding tracker.
  • Communicates regularly with the research coordinator to address any questions or concerns related to video coding.
  • Recruits participants for video content review.
  • Manages and organize feedback from review process, and synthesize results.
  • Prepares and supports senior leadership for speaking engagements and other activities; compiles notes and slide presentations based on the agreed-upon topic and audience; briefs speakers on key details prior to event.
  • Researches and internalizes the history of Mother Goose rhymes included in the Mother Goose Project.
  • Identifies key early learning and development skills that each rhyme supports.
  • Develops several activities and lessons that can accompany each rhyme.
  • Ensures that materials are user friendly and responsive to the challenging realities that early childhood educators face.
  • Provides technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • Research experience or graduate schooling related to human development, education, arts education, or early childhood.
  • Experience with database creation.
  • Experience working with young children in a professional, personal, or volunteer capacity.

Preferred Competencies
  • Working knowledge of early childhood care and education landscape in the U.S.
  • Action-oriented, able to complete a project with minimal oversight.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook and Google Documents.
  • Ability to think creatively and to translate creative ideas into concrete work product.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Desire for positive social change and commitment to the TMW Center's overarching mission of optimizing foundational brain development in all children during the first five years of life.
