LOCATION: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital
SHIFT: 12:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.


Under the general direction of a Radiologist or a Physician, the CAT Technologist performs CAT Scan examinations on in-patients and out-patients. Processes and critiques radiographic images, produce scans, monitors the CAT Scanner and performs other job related duties as assigned. Practices infection control and adheres to radiation safety measures.

Typical Duties
Prepares and sets up all equipment necessary for CAT Scanning examinations.
Explains procedures to the patient and assures the safety and comfort throughout CAT Scanning procedures.
Sends images to PAC's system. Enters patients in hospital R.I.S. (Cerner).
Sets the appropriate scanning data on equipment such as milliamperage, exposing time, slice thickness, cradle increment, orientation (HF, FF, VFF, VFH), scan fields, target factors, algorithm.
Obtains images of excellent diagnostic quality appropriate for the patient's medical problem.
Ensures that slices are of acceptable quality and assists with infusion if necessary.
Performs quality assurance tests daily and documents time.
Orders necessary supplies and maintains an adequate inventory.
Maintains daily log sheets with patient's initials, nature of examination, area examined, and type of protective devices used.
Assists in teaching CAT Scanning procedures to residents, technicians and students.
May initiate IV's for administration of contrast media.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of a two-year American Medical Association approved School of Radiologic Technology is required (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
Certification in CT through the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) is required (Must provide proof at time of interview )
Must be licensed by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) (Must provide proof at time of interview)
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)

Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of one (1) year of full-time work experience in performing Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Basic knowledge of computer science and computer technology.
Basic knowledge of CAT Scanning and PACS procedures.
Basic knowledge of Infection Control and Safety Guidelines.
Knowledge of Cerner, PC Computer Systems, PACS.
Thorough knowledge of anatomical structures and basic body physiology related to developmental stages and the aging process.
Good skills in interpreting the requests and instructions from a Physician or Radiologist.
Ability to examine and evaluate technical aspects.
Ability to lift 25 lbs. and over.
Must demonstrate continuing education in professional practice and technical skills.
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
