Job Description

Essential Functions:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. 
 

  • Installs, programs, optimizes, maintains, and corrects malfunctions occurring in base stations, console control equipment, base stations, mobile radios, mobile computers, portables radios, microwave radio and multiplex equipment, auxiliary power equipment, microprocessor recorders, amplifiers, antennas, cables and electronic devices.
  • Utilizes and maintains a variety of departmental equipment, tools, and diagnostic devices. 
  • Assembles, installs, and maintains backup power systems.
  • Provide concise and accurate documentation of maintenance performed for F.C.C. requirements and Radar Certifications.
  • Develops and implements modifications to electronic equipment.
  • Inspects properties for radio-site preparation and radio tower construction. Designs, installs, repairs, and maintains new and existing two-way radio systems including microwave and voting receiver components.
  • Originates, designs, fabricates, adjusts, repairs, and/or replaces systems, circuits, and components.
  • Plans work efforts to minimize interruption to the daily operations of radio system users for all the Tollway's departments.
  • Programs electronic equipment using specialized software or terminal emulation on a personal computer or electronic device.
  • Configure computer radio equipment.
  • Performs initial testing and optimization of mobile & portable radios, traffic radars, arrow boards, portable message boards, and computer-based equipment.
  • Provides emergency assistance on an as-needed basis in the repair and maintenance of the Tollway's communications system.
  • Assists in the procurement of telecommunication system components.
  • Creates radio network accessibility using VOIP/RoIP or other internet-based communications systems.
  • Maintains good working relationships with Tollway personnel to ensure proper quality of service. This includes training on the current job functions for new or other employees when required. 
  • Completes, on a timely basis, all technical and administrative documentation required for this position.
  • Provides 24/7 call out in response to emergency repair of essential telecommunications and/or electronic equipment.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills (Required):
Coordinating and performing a variety of technical radio communications maintenance functions.

  • Two (2) year’s electronics maintenance experience. 
  • Electronic circuitry and components. 
  • Must be able to read and interpret electronic schematics, the National Standard Color Code used on electronic components. 
  • Locating, diagnosing, and troubleshooting system malfunctions.
  • Principles and practices of radio communications, including P25, LMR, and LTR systems.
  • Understand and possess a working knowledge of transmission and receive theories of antenna tuning and the proper operation of a signal to wave (SWR) meter. 
  • The ability to properly solder, crimp, repair wiring and cabling used to electronics including Two-Way radio equipment. 
  • Networking protocols such as subnetting, vlan’s and basic switch and router configurations. 
  • Computer, digital, microwave, and MUX systems. 
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. 
  • Must have a FCC General Radiotelephone License or the equivalent (i.e. APCO, ICET, NABER Certificate) and or a current General class or higher Amateur Radio license issued by the FCC. 
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license 
  • Must have a working knowledge of computer-based systems (word processing and spreadsheets)
  • Ability to build, test, and tune radio antennas.

Education (Required)

  • Associate Degree or sixty (60) credit hours in Telecommunications Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Integrated Mechatronics and Manufacturing Technology or a closely related field with a concentration in electronics from a credited college or university.
     

Education (Preferred):

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or one hundred and twenty (120) credit hours in Telecommunications Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Integrated Mechatronics and Manufacturing Technology or a closely related field with a concentration in electronics from a credited college or university.
      
  • CCIE or MCSE certification
      
  • Successful completion of anyone of the following professional develop training certification offered by L3Harris, EF Johnson or Motorola which includes but not limited to the following courses:
    1. Motorola radio technician
    2. Motorola Astro 25 Security Patch management 
    3. Motorola ASTRO 25 systems Fleet Mapping 
    4. Motorola Introduction to R56
    5. Motorola Basic RF
    6. Motorola ASTRO 25 IV&D system overview and administrator workshop.
    7. EF Johnson Viking Radio Technician Level 2 Training 
    8. EF Johnson Viking Radio Fleet Manager  
    9. EF Johnson system Engineer
    10. L3 Harris radio technician training
    11. L3Harris Bundled P25 system manager training program
    12. L3Harris Fleet Mapping workshop 
    13. L3Harris P25 system overview
