Research Program Development Specialist - Atmospheric Sciences

The Department of Climate, Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences is searching for a Research Program Development Specialist to work with the special advisor to the chancellor for science and policy and identify and forge connections to facilitate university-wide, interdisciplinary research initiatives that will help transform society. You will facilitate the identification, formation, and development of interdisciplinary teams and initiatives that include but are not limited to the following: climate; weather; sustainability; environment; social, behavioral and economic sciences; agriculture; health, energy; communication; and policy.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Learn about key university research strengths across colleges, institutes, extension and other programs, and understand how they differentiate the university from its peers. Use this knowledge to identify the core capabilities, gaps and opportunities to develop substantial leadership, engaging external partners in the private and academic sectors as appropriate.
  • Working with deans, directors, and heads to identify and pursue new areas for interdisciplinary collaboration, novel education and training programs, and the translation of research outcomes into products and services for the benefit of society. Analyze what resources (including human resources) are needed to pursue them.
  • Suggesting strategies for engaging external stakeholders and partners, particularly with regard to underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Encouraging strategic economic development through technology commercialization, business, innovation and policy.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in the physical sciences, engineering, social, behavioral and economic sciences, or related fields.
  • Minimum of five years' experience working in a research, technology development, or research program development setting in academia, industry, a non-profit organization or government.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience facilitating interdisciplinary research teams, working across multiple disciplines, or in other ways working with or on programs involving multiple disciplines.

  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • General knowledge of research and education programs on the Urbana campus in these disciplines: climate, weather, sustainability, environment, social, behavioral, and economic sciences, agriculture, health and energy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of programs, policies, and procedures of funding agencies supporting social and behavioral science, as well as STEM disciplines, particularly the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • Appreciation of the importance of interdisciplinary research
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
