Job Description

This role is hybrid on-site (3) days a week in Northbrook or Chicago, IL

As a member of the Legal team, the Senior Corporate Counsel – Litigation and Disputes is a core member of UL Inc.‘s legal function. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation and Disputes, the Senior Corporate Counsel – Litigation and Disputes will work closely with the Chief Legal Office (CLO) and UL’s corporate and business leadership to coordinate and assist on the following matters.

+ Manage and support all aspects of potential, threatened, and active litigation matters for the company, in areas that include commercial litigation, product incidents, customer and supplier disputes, regulatory matters, and subpoenas.

+ Develop recommendations for the most effective strategy for defense or prosecution of these matters.

+ Support the preparation of company staff for legal proceedings, depositions and trial, and represent the company at trials, mediations, arbitrations, administrative hearings, and depositions.

+ Advise the company on litigation risk and strategy.

+ Oversee internal discovery efforts with or without outside counsel, including coordination with internal e-discovery team about document identification, searching, collection, and production.

+ Lead and supervise investigations in connection with a wide range of legal issues to identify problems and to support pending and potential litigation, investigations, and regulatory enforcement.

+ Assist with subpoena responses and other third-party requests for information.

+ Assist with periodic reporting on litigation matters.

+ Coordinate within CLO and support the development, revision and maintenance of both internal CLO and enterprise-wide procedures on matters related to dispute and litigation proceedings.

+ Support the development, revision, implementation and maintenance of policies, procedures, and technical and organizational controls to ensure the company’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

+ Coordinate on the management external counsel, as necessary, in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with CLO Billing guidelines.

+ Coordinate third-party vendors retained by UL on any litigation or dispute matters.

+ Perform other legal duties as directed by the Associate General Counsel or other CLO leadership.

+ JD degree and a minimum of 7 years relevant experience in a law firm or fast-paced and innovative corporate legal department

+ Bar admission in good standing

+ In-depth knowledge of laws and regulations

+ Experience in the following legal areas strongly preferred: product liability; commercial and contract disputes; securities litigation

+ Experience in taking and defending depositions, preparing witnesses, and attending hearings and trials

+ Strong analytical and organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills

+ Ability to use sound judgment, provide guidance, and make key decisions in a demanding and fast-paced environment

+ Ability to contribute as a team player and work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and business leaders to fulfill and advance company strategy

+ Ability to multi-task and organize workflow independently in response to the company’s strategic priorities and objectives

+ Willingness to travel
