Shift: Shift 1

Work Schedule: 2 Hr (8:00:00 AM – 10:00:00 AM)

Summary:

The Per Diem Clinical Data Abstractor’s chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data for all eligible cases and enters that information into the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database This is accomplished through high quality clinical screening, data compilation, documentation, and entry into the Adult and Pediatric NSQIP databases for the medical center. The role establishes strong working relationships with medical staff, nursing, administration, and support services. The role exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and ICARE values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Other information:

-Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing or healthcare field required

-Current State of Illinois medical or nursing licensure

-Three (3) or more years of experience in intensive care and/or surgical nursing required

-Basic Excel skills required

-Epic EMR experience required

-Good organizational, communication, analytical, writing, and computer skills are imperative

-Independent, self-motivated, and assertive

-Ability to perform tasks independently, prioritizes work, and analyzes data

-Team membership skills are crucial

Preferred Job Qualifications:

-Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred

-Knowledge of clinical registries, databases, as well as the organizational impact for registry/database measures used in external reporting environment preferred.

Responsibilities:

-Assists the Surgical Clinical Reviewer in the identification of surgical patients for inclusion in the program registry through the application of strict program inclusion/exclusion criteria.

-Responsible for the collection of pre-operative, operative and post-operative data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical records system.

-Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary (Epic, Surgeon Champion, ACS) to obtain valid reliable data for entry into the program.

-Responsible for tracking patient-level data, case completion information, and outreach attempts via Excel.

-Monitors and reports potential quality issues and makes recommendations when appropriate. Clinical Registry Participation/Website Interaction

-Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into clinical registry’s database and assuring the transmission of completed data.

-Responsible for successful completion of ACS NSQIP SCR training and annual SCR competency exam.

-Attends national conference pertaining to the program as requested.

Patient and Staff Interaction

-Contact patients and/ or families via telephone and/or Epic MyChart communications post-operatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital.

-Establishes effective working relationships with members of the QSVA team, Surgeon Champion, Surgical Teams, and ACS NSQIP staff.

-Promotes customer satisfaction among patients, families, healthcare providers, and payers.
