Position Summary
Primary responsibility is to perform careful and accurate scientific work using a variety of manual and automated procedures, while consistently maintaining compliance with all current regulatory agencies. The performance of EKG’s, arterial, capillary and venipuncture phlebotomy is required.  Accurate problem solving and judgement in high-pressure situations is required. Providing good customer service to patients, families, visitors, and physicians is also required.

Duties & Responsibilities
Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing accurately, timely, and efficiently.  Follows lab procedures carefully.
Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
Complies with all current regulatory standards; maintains departmental records of tests performed, test results, and equipment maintenance.
Performs as needed EKG tracings on in and out patients as ordered by the medical staff.
Performs venipunctures, finger punctures, and arterial punctures with the knowledge and skill necessary across the age spectrum, adapting care as necessary to the situation.
Performs various clerical duties required for the organization of the department, checks reports for completeness, distributes and files reports to assist in maintaining adequate laboratory records.
Understands the theory behind all testing and is able to troubleshoot utilizing the knowledge of that theory.
Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
Accurately assesses problems utilizing problem-solving skills.
Performs quality control, troubleshoots, and resolves quality control discrepancies and documents corrective actions before releasing/reporting patient results.
Performs instrument checks, maintenance and troubleshooting per department protocol and understands the operation and maintenance of equipment pertinent to job.
Demonstrates knowledge of abnormal and/or unusual test results and makes appropriate decisions about releasing the results.
Works in high stress situations with professionalism and makes sound judgment decisions based on education and experience.
Handles biohazard materials and/or chemicals according to established protocols.
Identifies risks and problems and brings them to the attention of laboratory leadership.
Maintains competence with the LIS and hospital EMR for accurate reporting of test results to the patient chart.
Uses and orders supplies in a cost effective manner.
Demonstrates ability to manage stress and personal morale.
Assists in the training of new hires and students as needed.
Completes required education as assigned by the hospital or as required to maintain certification.
Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
