Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Interiors Engineering is responsible for the full life cycle of United’s Cabin Interior program across the fleet. This includes responsibilities such as the investigation, cost analysis and execution of modifications and repairs to related interior equipment which includes seats, galleys, closets, bins, sidewalls, galley equipment, lavatories, oxygen systems, water and waste systems, emergency equipment, and other interior components. The Director provides technical engineering services, recommendations and trouble-shooting support to other divisions and personnel involved with aircraft systems. They are also responsible for project oversight and technical support for the operation, equipment reliability, modification and repair requirements for aircraft interior equipment. This role requires the coordination of efforts across Technical Operations and other divisions including Finance, Inflight, Flight Operations, Network and Marketing for projects relating to the customer-focused items. Knowledge of Interior and Cabin Systems certification in CFR 14 Parts 25 and 121 is required.

+ This position is based in Chicago

+ Travel up to 30%, international travel is required. Team members are based in Chicago, San Francisco, Houston and India.

+ Support outside of normal working hours for our 24/7 operation may be required.

+ US citizenship required.

Safety and compliance – Ensure that interiors, components and configurations meet United and Federal Aviation Regulation requirements.

Reliability – Track interiors and related component reliability to ensure aircraft are operating reliably and reliability drivers are being addressed effectively in design, modification and in the maintenance program tasks.

Project management – Guide the development and delivery of complex projects, coordination of supplier technical data and modification programs on multiple fleet types and projects. Follow through on change management and drive cross functional coordination of reconfiguration and modification projects as well as technical coordination on reliability upgrades.

Team development – Develop the Interiors Engineering team to grow talent and technical expertise across our diverse fleet. Perform hiring and review functions to ensure top performance on an ongoing basis.

Continuous improvement – Ensure an end to end closed and continuous feedback loop with interior equipment suppliers on new and modified products. Follow up on items that interrupt dispatch reliability of aircraft and ensure that maintenance documents are correct and improved for clarity, content and ease of execution.

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

+ Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Aviation Management, Engineering)

+ 3+ years of senior management experience

+ 7+ years engineering experience.

Extensive knowledge of FARs (Federal Aviation Regulation), airworthiness design and substantiation criteria, aircraft and equipment design and operational characteristics, aircraft materials and processes

+ Master’s degree or 6 years of relevant work experience

+ 5+ years of experience in leading teams in engineering and projects at an air carrier

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
