Job Description

Summary This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Civilian Reference Services Branch. The incumbent will perform reference services on the exceptionally complex and/or unusual requests for information and/or documents pertaining to the various non-current archival records in Center custody. Responsibilities As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, you will: Analyze high priority requests which originate from or routed through persons occupying high level positions and which include the most difficult and involved cases, such as litigation, complaints and appeals, genealogical and research and other controversial cases. Perform extensive research and search in the many record groups and series contained in the Center’s holdings, especially those groups that are extremely complex or disorganized in arrangement and must be able to recognize and interpret the multitude of forms and procedures used by the various Federal agencies in their past and present record making and maintenance procedures. Consult with or refers to supervisor with cases involving policy or precedent, together with a summary of all information and records available. Provide technical guidance to lower graded section employees, GS-5 and below, engaged in answering reference service requests which pertain to civilian personnel and personnel-related records. Requirements Conditions of Employment The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. A one-year probationary period may be required. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency. If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so. Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S. Employee must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Some of the physical requirements are: climbing caster equipped ladders and handling thereon boxes of records weighing up to 50 pounds that are stored up to 14 feet above the floor, considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting. Qualifications You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. Specialized Experience for the GS-06 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-05 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience: Communicating and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing; AND Using automated systems to organize and maintain documents; AND Interpreting or applying regulations and policies to accomplish work assignments. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.
