LIBRARIAN I (DISTRICT 1 – DISTRICT 6)

CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY

Number of Positions: Multiple

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $63,420

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under supervision, performs entry-level professional library work. Assists library patrons in using facility resources and provides information, reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons using both print and electronic resources. Assists library patrons with internet research and basic computer assistance. Assists in developing and administering library programs and services such as book discussions, library orientation, and community events. Establishes and maintains working relationships with community organizations to promote library services. Assists with collection maintenance. Promotes library programs, services and exhibits. Compiles and maintains records and reports of library activities and inventories. Assists with all customer service desk duties. May supervise the work of library associates, library pages and clerical staff. Works as part of a team to meet city and library goals. Participates in professional development. Interprets the Library’s policies and procedures to the public in a customer friendly manner. Upholds the Library’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Performs related duties as assigned.

LOCATION: Various District 1 through District 6

DAYS OFF: Two days per week

SHIFT: Will be required to work some evenings and weekends

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a Master’s degree in Library Science or an approved foreign credential evaluation.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

+ Experience working or volunteering in a library

+ Experience working in a customer service environment

+ Previous experience in education, social work or related fields

+ Ability to work with diverse patronage, including children, teens and adults

+ Proficiency in a foreign language
