Summary The Full Time Cook position is located within the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Marion VA Medical Center in Marion, IL. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include: Perform a variety of cooking tasks without close supervision. Must have the ability to learn and retain information, to concentrate for extended periods of time while performing cooking, serving, and cleaning duties. Must be able to read and write, as well as perform arithmetic computation such as adding, multiplying, and dividing ingredients for recipes. Must be able to determine portion costs. Adjust recipes for number of specified servings as needed. Prepares meats for cooking such as grinding, chopping, scooping, cutting, slicing, flouring, and breading. Operate a variety of kitchen equipment, which utilizes gas, electricity, steam, or microwave heat sources. Properly clean, store, and maintain all kitchen utensils. Applies sanitation principles to safeguard food against spoilage and waste. Checks deliveries of food and supplies for quality and quantity against written standards and purchase order. Under supervision, stores or discards leftovers as prescribed in written procedures. Performs other duties assigned or as necessary. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/24/2024. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: Minimum of one (1) year experience in the food service industry You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Arithmetic Decision Making Food Service Self-Management Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds (utensils or containers of food) and occasional lifting of food items over 40 pounds. Incumbent is subject to temperatures above ad below normal, steam, fumes and odors from cooking; cuts from knives and kitchen equipment; burns, noise, humidity and falling on slippery floors. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
