About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC). Responsibilities Pass on instructions received from supervisor and starts work (e.g. by assigning immediate tasks to individual members of the group led). Ensure needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available and needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Check work progress and when finished and checks for compliance with supervisor’s instructions on work sequence procedures, methods, and deadlines. Ensure safety and housekeeping rules are followed (e.g. ensures machine capacities are not exceeded and tools are properly used). Work along others, setting the pace. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) one (1) year by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist Leader without more than normal supervision. The work of the position normally include: Ability to lead/work beside Machinist in a manufacturing environment, which includes, but not limited to, the following: set up and operate specialized or non-standard machine tools (i.e jig borers, precision boring mills or Numerical Control (NC) machines) to complete assigned work; resolve problems concerning machnining procedures to keep operartions running – Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Lead or Supervise Ability To Use Hand Tools for Machine Shop Ability To Use Shop Drawings Knowledge of Metals Operation of Machine Tools Physical Efforts: Work requires standing, bending, reaching, and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally weighing as much as 45 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, and other workers are available for heavier items. Working Conditions: Work in a well lighted, heated, ventilated shop. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and times. subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required. Education Additional Information The Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center occupies 1.5 million square feet of its Kingsbury Complex home. As the only multi-purpose and vertically integrated metal manufacturer in the Department of Defense, the center possesses the unique technical expertise and equipment to manufacture products high in quality and sustainability.
