Job Summary

The Assistant Superintendent of Grounds assists in the direction of staff and in the management of operations involved in the continued development and maintenance of the Department of Campus Recreation athletic playfields and grounds.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operations Management:
    • Independently assists in the general oversight of the maintenance, repair, new construction, alteration of grounds,
    and landscaping work as needed on the Campus Recreation athletic playfields and grounds.
    • Demonstrate and apply advance knowledge related to turf management, including mowing, watering, fertilization,
    seeding and sodding on a daily basis. • Supervises and manages the grounds mechanical shop and the operation,
    maintenance, and repair of the ground's equipment.
    • Operation and maintenance of tractors, large area mowers, tractor-mounted slit-seeders, aerators, and top dressers. • Advises supervisor concerning supply needs, replacement schedule for equipment, and related operational
    functions.
    • Assists in the scheduling and estimation of work requests, contacting vendors, and conducting research to
    determine cost replacement for parts or new equipment costs.
  • Staff Supervision:
    • Provide on-site supervision of department staff (Maintenance Workers, Extra Help, and student workers) engaged in
    field layout and maintenance, repair, new construction, and alteration of grounds (trash and garbage removal,
    snow removal, or the delivery of freight).
    • Assumes duties of supervisor during absences.
  • Administrative:
    • Participates in the interview process, makes recommendations for selection, trains, and provides new personnel
    area orientation.
  • Other Duties:
    • Performs related duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
Physical Demands:
Position involves regular lifting of heavy objects such as 5-gallon paint buckets, 50-pound bags of seed or fertilizer, etc.
Operation of various equipment for extended periods of time.
Performs routine manual work (digging, raking, etc.).

Working Conditions:
Most of the work is performed outside in inclement weather during the three seasons of the year.
May be exposed to heat, excessive noise, humidity, wind, rain, and snow.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below:
A. Coursework in horticulture, landscape design, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
B. Work experience in grounds maintenance.

3. Additional one (1) year (12 months) of supervisory work experience in grounds maintenance.

Note: Based on position and institutional requirements, licensure to use or supervise the use of pesticides under the Illinois Pesticide Act, the category of the license depends on the nature of the work to be performed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Supervisory and management skills.
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and equipment usage related to athletic field maintenance.
  • Knowledge of landscape methods, materials, and design.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative; able to successfully manage multiple priorities and work under pressure of deadlines.
  • Able to exercise sound judgment and adapt to new responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain close relationships with Campus Recreation Staff, DIA Staff, Turf Research Staff, F&S Crafts/Trades, and other campus units.
  • Able to adhere to proper shop safety practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong written and verbal skills and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
  • Ability to determine the needs of facility scheduling and event services unit and make sound field judgements to ensure a reasonable level of safety is achieved.
  • Skill in scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, the public, and outside constituency groups
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3382 - Assistant Superintendent of Grounds position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary starts at $50,310/yr is commensurate with experience. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
