The College of Law at the University of Illinois is seeking an Assistant Director to focus on career counseling as part of its Graduate & International programs. This position provides career counseling services and programming to graduate and international students and alumni of the University of Illinois College of Law and develops a portfolio of potential employers of particular interest to foreign-trained attorneys.

Duties & Responsibilities

Career Counseling, Programming, and Academic Advising
• Provide one-on-one career counseling to international law students and alumni to assist them with their professional development. Provide one-on-one course advisement and program requirements to current law students.
• Assist students in understanding the structure and requirements of College degree and professional programs.
• Provide ongoing advising support for students with increased availability at critical and high-volume advising times such as mid-semester deadlines, priority course registration periods, and other designated times throughout the academic year.
• Assist with identifying and developing long and short-term placement opportunities, including law firms, government agencies, public interest agencies, in-house counsel, and law-adjacent fields.
• Foster relationships with employers and alumni. Interact regularly with alumni seeking to assist the LLM students by providing mentoring and employment opportunities.
• Oversee and facilitate programming sponsored by the Graduate and International Office (at times in conjunction with the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development and the Office of Student Services), including professional development courses.
• Connect current students to alumni mentors appropriate for the student's preferred practice areas/setting/market.
• Establish summer placements for the Global Law Fellows program.

Administrative Responsibilities
• Support functions of graduate and international office.

• Mentor and advise LLM students on course selection, study skills, and professional development.
• Participate in the Office's strategic planning efforts.
• Other duties as assigned.

Travel Requirements: Occasionally for job fairs, employer visits, or professional development seminars

Minimum Qualifications: Juris Doctor from a U.S. law school and maintenance of active bar license. Strong interest in mentoring and counseling of law students.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with employment and immigration landscape for international audiences. Some legal practice experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills required.

Appointment Information: This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/16/2024. Salary is commensurate with experience.
