The University of Illinois College of Law strives to set the standard for the professional development of law students. The Office of Career Planning and Professional Development at the College of Law focuses on preparing our students to function at a high level in the legal profession. Our office's team offers students individualized counseling and group programming and has developed a reputation as a "go-to" destination for quality advice and support. Our team is one of the most experienced and effective groups in this space. Now, to further enhance the services we offer our students, the Office seeks to hire a new member of our team - an Associate Director of Career Planning and Professional Development - to provide career and academic counseling services to our students and alumni and to bring new ideas and energy to our team as we work together to build on our success.

Job Summary
Provide career and academic counseling services to students and alumni of the University of Illinois College of Law, with emphasis on careers of particular interest to students and graduates of the College of Law.

Duties & Responsibilities

Career Counseling, Programming, and Academic Advising
• Provide one-on-one career counseling to law students and alumni to assist them with their professional development.
• Provide one-on-one course advisement and program requirements to current law students.
• Assist students in understanding the structure and degree requirements of the JD program.
• Provide ongoing advising support for students with increased availability at critical and high-volume advising times such as mid-semester deadlines, priority course registration periods, and other designated times throughout the academic year.
• Provide one-on-one career counseling to law students and alumni focused on individual practice areas, settings, and/or markets. Particular practice settings include, but are not limited to, large law firms, mid-sized law firms, government agencies, public interest agencies, JD advantage careers, and federal and state clerkships. Particular practice areas include but are not limited to, litigation, transactional, and intellectual property law. Particular markets include, but are not limited to, Chicago, Illinois (outside of Chicago), California, New York, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, and Texas.
• Strengthen relationships with employers and alumni. Interact regularly with alumni seeking to assist the College of Law by providing mentoring and employment opportunities.

• Oversee and facilitate programming sponsored by the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development.
• Connect current students to alumni mentors appropriate for the student's preferred practice areas/setting/market.
• Provide mentoring to College of Law student groups.

Marketing, Employer Outreach, Research, and Reporting
• Actively participate in the National Association of Law Placement (NALP) and the Chicago Area Law School Consortium (CALSC).
• Present programs on employment, hiring, and marketing trends for legal employers upon request (how to best recruit and market to our students and alumni).

Administrative Tasks
• Outreach to student groups, including publicizing job fairs, fellowships, and employment programs.
• Participate in the Office's strategic planning efforts.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment

Travel Requirements: Occasionally for job fairs, employer visits, or professional development seminars

Minimum Qualifications: Juris Doctor from a U.S. law school and maintenance of active bar license and 3+ years of legal practice experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 3+ years of legal practice experience; experience in a law career services function.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills required.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/16/2024. The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000.
