LIBRARY ASSOCIATEHOURLY (DISTRICT 1 – DISTRICT 6)

CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY

Number of Positions: Multiple

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $30.44/Hourly

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Assisting library users with reference questions. Finding print, electronic, or media resources to meet user’s information needs. Assisting with the maintenance of library collections. Supporting community members and community groups. Helping patrons utilize technology found in the library. Under supervision, developing age/content appropriate programming for the relevant service group. Supporting library programming, outreach, and initiatives. Continuously developing skills through professional development. Performs related duties as assigned.

LOCATION: Various District 1 through District 6

DAYS OFF: Two days per week

SHIFT: Will be required to work some evenings and weekends

HOURS: 80 hours per month to be scheduled during normal unit hours

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

· Experience working or volunteering in a library

· Experience working in a customer service environment

· Previous experience in education, social work or related fields

· Ability to work with diverse patronage, including children, teens and adults

· Coursework in pursuit of a MLIS or MSLIS

· World language proficiency
