Property Custodian

Chicago Police Department

Number of Positions: 4 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

This position is open to the public and all current city employees covered under the City’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, Property Custodians are responsible for the receipt, sorting, distribution, storage, and return of property, excluding narcotics and firearms received by Chicago Police Department. The position of Property Custodian requires a keen attention to detail and an ability to identify proper item categorization to ensure property is sorted and forwarded to the appropriate storage location as well as returned to its rightful owner or destroyed in accordance with established protocols.

Essential Duties:

+ ??Receives, stores, issues and delivers a large and varied stock of materials including confiscated physical property.

+ Conducts physical inventories to balance stock against unit inventory records.

+ Inspects goods delivered against receiving reports.

+ Prepares inventory reports for confiscated property.

+ Receives sorts and delivers mail to department wide facilities.

+ Operates a remote terminal to enter, update and retrieve inventory data.

+ Operates a departmental vehicle to deliver document, evidence and intra-departmental mail.

+ Answers telephone inquiries regarding confiscated prisoner property

+ Prepares and submits daily trip forms including time, location and mileage information.

+ Prepares work reports and maintain a clean and safe work area,

NOTE: Location Assignment Subject to Change

SHIFT: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM /Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday

THIS POSITION IS THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications:

Two years of combined work experience performing clerical, storekeeping, inventory control or personal computer work

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

+ A valid driver license from the State of Illinois is required.

Physical Requirements

+ Ability to lift and carry 25 to 50 pound including mail bags and boxes, recovered property, furniture, office supplies and equipment (some positions may require the ability to transport weight at least 10 feet and place on a hand cart to load vehicles)

+ Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time.

+ Ability to climb staircases, ladders and, and/or step stools.

+ Ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach out with one’s body arms and legs.

+ Ability to operate a personal computer and related equipment.

NOTE: This position requires successful candidates to pass a pre-employment physical.

NOTE: You must provide your transcripts or diploma, professional license, or training certificates at time of processing, if applicable . You must also provide your valid U.S. driver’s license at time of processing.

Selection Criteria

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

· Previous experience involving customer service of interaction with the public.

· Previous work experience with data entry and databases.

· Previous administrative experience in law enforcement setting.

· Previous knowledge of applicable City and Department policies, protocols, and procedures.

· An Associate’s degree or 60 hours of college credits

Application Evaluation: Initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application and the documents submitted. Department of Human Resource staff will review applications after the final posting date. Staff will follow any and all required Employment/Hiring Plan provisions, federal, state and local laws, and Collective Bargaining Agreements when applicable. Staff will apply hiring preferences as required by the municipal code. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligibility list in lottery order.
