Position Summary:

POSITION SUMMARY

The North Central College English Language Institute ( ELI ) is seeking part-time instructors in the Intensive English Program. Course instruction may include Reading & Vocabulary, Writing & Grammar, Listening and Speaking, or Cultural Topics.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The part-time instructors report to the ELI Director. This position is responsible for teaching multilingual students in a variety of academic English language topics, at different levels. Instructors should be familiar with needs assessments and be able to effectively adapt curriculum to serve a variety of student populations.

DESCRIPTION OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Note that all functions described below must be performed, and it is normally the responsibility of the individual in this position to perform them and/or see that they are performed.

1. Prepare for and teach courses for English Language Learners as assigned and in accordance with curricular guidelines.

2. Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies.

3. Maintain and submit records of student attendance in accordance with program requirements.

4. Maintain and submit course syllabi and lesson plans in accordance with program requirements.

5. Attend scheduled staff meetings.

6. Meet with students, as appropriate.

7. Participate in orientation and placement testing, as required.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Individual must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities described below or be able to explain and demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. + Ability to effectively adapt ELI course materials to serve students of various levels of English language proficiency

+ Ability to effectively teach multilingual students in a variety of subjects (Reading & Vocabulary, Writing & Grammar, Listening and Speaking, or Cultural Topics)

+ A demonstrated ability to work with multilingual students from varying backgrounds and the ability to exercise the proper balance of persistence and patience as individually appropriate

+ Ability to consistently demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills

+ Ability to work effectively as a member of a staff where teamwork and cooperation are important

+ Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment

+ Ability to use computer-based systems, including word-processing, Google docs, Microsoft excel

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education and Experience:

+ Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or related field.

+ Experience teaching in an Intensive English Program at the university level preferred.

+ Experience teaching mixed-level students preferred.

+ Experience with content-based instruction preferred.

+ Experience working with students from beginning to advanced level preferred.

+ Experience with alternative forms of assessment preferred
