1. General job duties. Types of procedures required.

2G is a 22 bed general status unit that cares for patients coming in for elective bariatric surgery, specialty plastics procedures that require frequent assessments of surgical skin grafts/flaps, patients who come in for management of chronic wounds that may need debridement and frequent wound care, limb re-attachment, post-op cosmetic surgeries, burns that require frequent assessment/dressing care, and occasionally post-op gynecologic surgeries. Patients range from young adult to geriatric. An average length of stay for bariatric surgical patients is 2 days, and 14-30 days for our complex plastics patients. The 2G patient population provides a robust learning environment where nurses gain experience working in interdisciplinary care planning, medication administration, bedside procedures, and patient/family education.

Nursing Skills developed on the unit include-Wound management, specialty dressing care, leeching, surgical drain management, Vac pumps, PCA’s, specialty beds, capnography, post-surgical care, NG tube placement, ostomy care, TPN, central lines, and medication management.

2. Equipment utilized in the unit/dept. (Is there computerized charting, medication systems, etc.)

Electronic Health Record – Cerner System and use of bedside bar code administration

Defibrillators, bed scales, cautery, stand up scales, infusion pumps, IV equipment, suction equipment, intubation equipment, central lines, VACS, biopsy instruments, capnography and CPAP.

3. Required skills and minimum years of experience.

At least 1 year of experience on a Medical-Surgical unit

4. Specific licensures and certifications/registrations required. (ARRT, CRT, BLS, ACLS, etc)

Current and active IL license required as well as BLS

5. Shift or schedule requirements. (Will the employee ever work alone? Is call required? If so, how often? Are weekends required?)

Every other weekend rotation is expected. Shift to be determined at the time of request

36 Hours per week

No call

Employee will always work with a team of nurses, patient care technicians, and a unit secretary

6. Floating to other units/departments. (If so, to which units/departments?)

Will need to be flexible to assist with staffing on other Medical-Surgical units

7. Bed size/number of rooms for this unit/dept.

22 Beds

8. Nurse to patient ratio of this unit. (nursing only)

1:5-6

9. Dress Code:

Any color scrubs

10. Tell us about the unit/department specific training and orientation program.

Classroom training for computer charting and quality indicators is provided along with 24hrs of unit specific orientation
