Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications


Overview
Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director Sports Performance. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits. Under the general supervision of the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Performance, this position is responsible for assisting in the management and administration of all phases of the sports performance operations.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Performance, the individual in this position will assist with all aspects of Strength and Conditioning for assigned sport programs.

This is a professional coaching position and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adhering with the policies, rules and regulations of affiliated national, regional and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the Mid-American conference (or subsequent member conference) and the university.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safety and Conduct
Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the team(s).
Strives to reduce the likelihood of sports-related injuries or the aggravation of such injuries during practice sessions and scheduled contests by being knowledgeable of the injuries sustained in the sport and teaching proper prevention methods, directing appropriate pre-training session and pre-contest preparations and warm ups, and working with qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic trainers during all training sessions and contests.
Responsible for team training for assigned sport(s).


Team Training
Enables student-athletes to perform to their physical potential in their sport through the development and management of individual and group weight, strength, and fitness training programs.
Develops programs by evaluating current physical conditioning, having a knowledge of the various sports and associated exercises, tailoring strength programs for specific needs, demonstrating proper performance of exercises, correcting mistakes.
Manages programs by monitoring progress and providing an assessment of development.

Relations and Teamwork
Promotes commitment, teamwork and develops working relationships.
Establishes rapport with and ensures open lines of communication with the coaching staff, student-athletes of all teams, and athletic training staff.

Administration
Assists in the administration of the entire program, including assisting with daily weight room practices and conditioning responsibilities.
Provides an overall positive environment for the strength and conditioning development of all student-athletes.
Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Student-Athlete Well-Being
Supports recommendations as set forth by athletics department designated registered dietitian for good nutrition and supplementation for the health and performance of the student-athletes.

Maintenance of Weight Room
Develops and implements a cleaning schedule for the weight room and weight room equipment in the Yordon Center weight room.

Bachelor's Degree in exercise science field.
Minimum two years of experience in strength and conditioning on the university or college level.
Minimum one year of administrative experience in a sports training facility, department, or program.
