Caterpillar Inc. seeks Engineering Project Team Leader at its facility located at 2427 East Engine Drive, Chillicothe, Illinois 61523.

Job Description:

Lead development, continuously learning through experience new business knowledge and skill. Enhance the team’s creativity; facilitate the team’s cooperation; clearly communicate requirements and tasks while gaining input from the team on refinement of same; translate both verbal and non-verbal information from customers, management, and team members. Spokesperson for the team in meetings with multiple levels of management and with customers. Develop networks to enable obtaining resources and cooperation needed and remove roadblocks to ensure the success of the team. Provide input on performance reviews for team members. Manage vision and purpose, make quality decisions, and negotiate. Set strategy at the project level. Solve problems for a single technology, component, product, or process. Project scope will vary and will require broad business understanding. Draw upon foundational product development skills such as conceptual design, development of product and/or process, data analysis and extraction, failure resolution & prevention, and requirements management. Utilize skill in technical project management, development of products, internal and external requirements management, and cost-value management. Understand customers’ needs and application of products or processes, as well as keeping up with technology. Select & manage teams to solve technical problems or create critical component(s) and systems or processes. Pull input from the whole team to formulate decisions and develop output for the job/project. Act as a team leader, plan and manage the job/project; manage the business/financial aspects of the job or project; provide a supportive work environment for the team; mentor, coach, and develop others; and manage one’s own development. Interact with people from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds. Work within the team and beyond the team with contractors, hourly, salaried and management employees, suppliers, customers, and individuals working in many Caterpillar organizations. Decisions may affect the job/project team, the division or business unit, suppliers, both internal and external customers, and the market. Decisions may impact the entire product, process or factory, warranty, sales, and customers’ perceptions, and can cause an evolutionary change in technology. Expectations demand that jobs/projects be completed on time, independent of the hours required. Acknowledging trade-offs between time, resources and quality and raising the customers’ and management’s awareness of those trade-offs is essential.

Requirements:

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field, plus Eight (8) years of experience (which may have been gained concurrently) as a Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer, Materials Engineer, or related occupation. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field, plus Five (5) years of experience (which may have been gained concurrently) as a Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer, Materials Engineer, or related occupation. Additionally, the applicant must have employment experience (which may have been gained concurrently) with: (1) J1939 Vehicle datalink communication and Vector CANAPE/CANALYZER tools; (2) Developing in real time models from high fidelity physics based plant models; (3) Leading engineers in performing HIL testing on DSPACE (PHS and Scalexio) systems, including harness troubleshooting, plant model testing, and test case reviews; (4) Leading design reviews, test plan reviews; and DFMEA activities; (5) Compliance with software coding standards, software version control and releasing with GIT, tagging and dependency management with IVY necessary for software development; (6) Evaluating engine, transmission, and hydraulics plant model accuracy via engineering analysis and comparison with vehicle testing; (7) Performing simplification to ensure real time performance of electric drive and autonomous vehicle subsystem models; and (8) Developing closed loop SIL (Software in the Loop) testing platforms for engine, transmission, and hydraulic machines.
