Summary:
Goldbelt C6 is seeking a Microbiologist to provide support in conducting research to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of survival of bacterial and viral pathogens in foods and food production environment. To evaluate the effectiveness of preventive controls to limit the risk of transfer and survival of foodborne pathogens and enteric viruses.

 


Responsibilities

 

Essential Job Functions:
Assess the effectiveness of analytical methods for pathogens in foods and on food production surfaces.
Evaluate the effects of sanitation procedures on the presence of foodborne pathogens.
Provide consultation and guidance to policy offices/branches within the Agency.
Provide a major role in implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the drafting of guidance and other regulatory documents, and providing guidance and assistance during ORA food plant inspection activities.
Investigate survival and growth of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods as identified through the Office of Food Safety Prevention Strategies and includes low moisture foods, fresh produce, and multi-commodity foods.
Investigate inactivation of foodborne pathogens via chemical and thermal interventions in these foods.
Evaluate detection of foodborne pathogens in these foods using traditional and molecular techniques.
Investigate the survival and growth of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods and environments at typical and abuse conditions.
Evaluate the efficacy of processing technologies, including thermal and chemical methods, on the inactivation of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods and environments.
Use traditional and molecular microbiology techniques for the detection of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods and environments.
Perform laboratory-scale experiments aimed at investigating the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters on the survival and growth of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods. Ready-to-eat foods should support the Prevention Strategy needs identified by the Office of Food Safety. Conditions should include temperature and humidity control.
Design and perform laboratory experiments to evaluate the efficacy of processing technologies, thermal and chemical, on the inactivation of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods.
Compare FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) methods for the detection of low levels of foodborne pathogens.
Analyze and interpret research data to evaluate laboratory performance. Perform and interpret statistical analyses of data generated from laboratory experiments. Model data for pathogen inactivation and growth in foods. Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and posters for presentation at scientific conferences.
Will serve as laboratory manager and coordinate work in laboratories with Illinois Institute of Technology graduate students.

 


Qualifications

 

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
Proficiency in microbiological techniques and methodologies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to multi-task with experiments.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and practices.
Trustworthy and honest.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in microbiology or related scientific field.
Five (5) to ten (10) years' experience in working in Foods Science.
Experience with BAM and ISO methods of detection of pathogens.
Experience in designing and carrying out experiments and evaluates the efficacy of processing technologies, thermal and chemical, on the inactivation of foodborne pathogens in ready-to-eat foods.
Experience in effects of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters.
