Description

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum, located in a historic Beau Arts-style building in downtown Council Bluffs, Iowa; historic Mile 0 for Union Pacific, houses one of the nation's oldest corporate collections. A mix of artifacts, photographs, and documents make up the unique inventory that traces the development of the transcontinental railroad. This internship focuses primarily on the photographs -- approximately 500,000 glass plate negatives, slides, stereocards, film, and prints. The aim is to digitally capture significant photographs to preserve their place in American history for future generations and make them available to universities, cultural institutions, publishers, and exhibitors.

The prospective intern will work to organize, index, rehouse, and digitize photographs using top-of-the-line technology and innovative archival concepts. This well-rounded position will assist with general museum operations, including research, making this internship an ideal choice for students looking to obtain employment in the museum or archival profession. This is a year-round position with a flexible work schedule of approximately twenty hours per week.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college degree program with a major discipline declared in Museum Studies, Library Science, History, Public History or Public Administration. Applicants must also have completed four semesters of study in a college degree program.

Accountabilities

Organize and prepare collection images identified for digital scanning process. Index and rehouse images as well as apply metadata.

Manage digitized scanning project plan. Collaborate with and coordinate internal and external resources to ensure on-time, on-specification, and on-budget delivery of digital assets.

Become subject matter expert in the use and application of computerized archive inventory and related software.

Monitor digitizing scanning processes and ensure that quality objectives are achieved for image quality and other plan specifications.

Assist with general museum operations, historical research and other projects as requested.

Qualifications - Required

College credits equivalent to two years towards an undergraduate degree in Museum Studies, Library Science, History, or Public Administration. Must include basic historical research methodology or similar applied experience.

Qualifications - Preferred

1 year(s) experience in computer applications demonstrating proficiency with MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, and/or Access).
1 year(s) experience / knowledge in a management / professional position specifically knowledge of digital photographic tools, general photographic techniques, materials and other processes.
Basic project management skills
Basic analytical and problem-solving skills
Basic time management skills
