Description:

The Research Technologist I provides para-professional support to the veterinary technicians in the experimental surgery and diagnostic laboratory of the Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL). This position also assists BRL staff in the daily care and management of the UIC animal colonies.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Assist with room set up, restocking supplies, and cleaning and disinfection of operating rooms, equipment and instruments, and support areas after use.
Assist in monitoring physiologic status during and after surgical procedures.
Maintain inventory and restock personal protective equipment in surgical and animal housing areas.
Fill orders for drugs and supplies placed by research staff.
Provide support to veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and husbandry staff including animal handling and restraint, administration of compounds, and collection of blood or other biological samples.
Assist the behavior specialist in providing environmental enrichment and animal training.
Enter billing charges incurred by research or veterinary staff and husbandry supply requests.
Restock anesthesia forms and other paperwork used in the department.
Perform additional support duties assigned by the veterinary technician supervisor and participate in special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Bachelor's Degree in biological, chemical, or medical sciences (such as biology, pharmacology/toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, physiology, or medical technology), or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previouse experience within a laboratory animal environment.
Ability to understand and follow complex technical instructions.
Knowledge related to the specified field of research.
Knowledge of safety and quality control practices and procedures.
Ability to interpret, audit, summarize, and present complex data both accurately and thoroughly.
